FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

So much to see and learn in York. If you love learning about history, York will not Disappoint. we did the jorvik viking centre and it was fabulous. Cliffton Tower was worth the visit, Great views from the top for all the photo lovers. we got rained out on one day, so we didn't get to do everything we wanted. Hope to make it back one day.

York is a beautiful historic city.

York is a beautiful historic city. We timed our trip right just after the summer holidays and before half term and the winter season begins as on this visit we could walk around more comfortably still lots of people but not mass crowds of tourists meant this trip a lot more chilled and relaxed.

    York is a marvel.

York is a marvel. It has so many buildings dating from the 16th, i7th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. It is quite walkable and pedestrian friendly. York Minster is a must-see. The people were courteous and friendly.

I'm a bit of a history nut; so walked some of the walls, toured the Minster, went to the Viking museum , the York museum and the Adventurers Guildhall, as well as the obligatory wander down the Shambles. Was all I could fit into 36 hours, so fairly happy with that. Maybe the castle museum would have filled in the medieval section of York's history a bit more; I really only felt like I missed out on the Richard 111 aspect of your gorgeous town. My husband raved over the railway museum too ; something for everyone !!

A WALK ALONG 'THE SHAMBLES' IS A GREAT PLACE FOR OLD ARCHITECTURE. HARRY POTTER FANS WILL LOVE IT. LOTS OF GOOD RESTAURANTS (STAY AWAY FROM SLUG & LETTUCE, GAVE ME DIARRHEA AND UPSET STOMACH). A CITY FULL OF HISTORY. EXPENSIVE BUT WELL WORTH A RETURN VISIT FOR A LONGER STAY.

Great location for city centre and all the main sites in York. The apartment itself is modern and very comfortable for 4 persons. It is also good value when compared to the higher end hotels in the area. Welcome hamper from the host was also a very nice touch. Finally the free car park space in a nearby car park was an added bonus! We would definitely recommend this place to anyone thinking of paying a visit to York.
