Heraklio was a great place to start an exploration of Crete. There were so many great day trips - Lasithi Plain Olive Mill, Knossos Palace, Santorini Island, Spinolonga Island, and a Sailboat Cruise to Dia Island. We created our own walking tour of Heraklio, seeing the Cathedrals of St. Minas and Saint Titus, Kornarou Square with tthe Ottoman Pumphous, Bembo Fountain, and State of Erotokritos, Martinengo Bastian, Makasi Gate, Venetian walls, and Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis, the Morosini Fountain, Peoria Vechi, and the Venetian Loggia. There were so many great places to eat and shops. Some of our favorites were on 25. August Street which leads directly to the harbor and Koules (fortress). The town was buzzing and full of life. Some excellent restaurants (peskesi a stand out) Beaches were stunning especially when blessed with perfect summer weather. Heraklio was beautiful. The archeological museum is incredible. The history musuem is likewise. The underpopularized The Museum of Ancient Technology was faciinating.......The city is a fine landing place to Crete and offers much more on its own, however we found the graffiti to be overwhelming. I do not believe the slander of it to reflective of the intellegence of the residents of the city - from my interactions. Moreover the beauty of the archetecture is marred by the slander perpetrated. There is a lot of History , the people we met were very friendly, food was great and it was easy to see the city on the buses. The museums were amazing and interesting . It's an amazing trip experience that combines both the sea side stuff and the full comfort of a city. You can find small beaches along the shore, and a large embankment right across the venetian port that is perfect for evening walks (it has approx.. 2,4 km in length). There are also a lot of restaurants and bars you can hop into. I would dearly recommend Peskesi, Petousis, Sir Papafigos, Parasties for food, Take five or Toucan Skybar for drinks, but there are a lot more that are waiting to be discovered. Iraklio has a lot of small good restaurants, serving the local food. It looks bigger than it is, because there is such life, and many shops. Its not a city with many sights, so you have to be prepared to take some small trips på Knossos, Archanes, the lashiki plateau, a local beach and so on. We “had to” stay for 7 days, because of our flights, and that was 1-2 days too much. But that was due to us, and not the city.Guest review byJacobDenmark
