Kissamos offered us a wonderful mix of relaxation and local charm. The nightlife was a pleasant surprise, with cozy bars and lively tavernas where we enjoyed delicious food and drinks. Evening walks through the town square and the nearby streets filled with local shops and traditional products were some of the highlights of our stay. Kissamos itself as a town is nothing special but it has some seafront tavernas and its location makes it a good base to explore the local area - in particular to take a boat trip around to Balos bay and lagoon which is highly recommended, including a stop at Gramvousa island to walk up to the castle. It's also a short drive over the hill to Falasarna bay for a closer nice beach option with sunbeds. Kissamos is not really a tourist town - yet, but has all that you need for self-catering and a reasonable selection of tavernas and cafes. It is ideal as touring base. A car is pretty much essential though there are buses. Near the Hermes hotel there is a lovely sandy beach plus useful tavernas and cafes. The hotel is in a very quite area, the last building before Balos Beach entrance. And it’s also close to one of the best restaurant in Crete: the Gramboussa restaurant. Staff is very friendly and open to accommodate requests. Our room had sea view and that was amazing: we slept with open window and you can actually hear the waves without noise of other people and cars! Breakfast offers a variety of options. The staff were excellent and amongst the friendliest we've met. Hotel clean, lovely pool, plenty of parking, good choice of food with a lovely view over the bay. The Beach is decent enough to chill and swim. Our family room was bigger than I had expected.
