A very good base for very many superb beaches in southern Crete, with a nice beach within the town, some great shops and very good eating options both within the town and the surrounding villages. Plakias is a small town, out of the way and just what we...
Plakias is a small town, out of the way and just what we like. Reminiscent of Katelios on Kefalonia but a much bigger beach, with a quite well catered for naturist section at the southern end with two sunbeds and a parasol for EUR 9 per day or space to bring your own. The central to northern beach is mostly sunbed city but in this case the sand and sun are so hot you really need them. In late August, the sea was mostly calm but the wind can get up and waves got fairly strong at times. I visited the beach bar daily for liquid refreshment and the local beer mamos is perfect and EUR 5 for 500ml(?) seemed fair at this remote location. There is a small section of shops, bars and restaurants at the north end f town. We particularly liked Sofia's restaurant due to it's shorefront location, but we had nice meals elsewhere too. The area round the shops has been prettied up with a colourful fountain that children enjoyed playing in. Although hilly and winding roads dominate the whole region, the main street through town is a steady incline and no problem for most people. Plakias has a very pleasant beach-side walkway, good restaurants close to the beach,, a choice of supermarkets if needed, and a variety of hotels/resorts to suit different budgets. There is also the option of a naturist beach at the eastern end, and various boat or coach excursions are possible. It needs a proper bus station, instead of a patch of waste ground with no facilities as at present. A few years ago there was at least a kiosk from which tickets could be bought and timetable information was available. Bus to Rethymno for a day out costs 5 euro each for a 45-50 minute ride past wonderful gorge scenery.Guest review byDAVIDUnited Kingdom - 8.0
There are plenty of places offering food and drink.
There are plenty of places offering food and drink. We particularly liked Veranda, Ostrako, Sweet Creations and of course we had to visit Takis at Muses who genuinely remembered us from our previous visit 3 years before! Kri Kri, Kyma and Gialos also worth a visit. We did not have enough days to try all of the others! From traditional to modern. A very friendly place. A nice long level promenade which is an easy walk and which has been nicely paved. A long beach but is more shingle than sand. At the far end of the beach you can take the side roads and walk uphill if you need a bit more of a stretch. These connect back to the town. Beach bars and sun beds along the length of the beach but do not clutter it. Short drives to Souda Beach and to Dimnoni and Ammoudi Beaches - you have to have to have lunch at Chyma Sto Kyma at Ammoudi! It can sometimes be very windy on Crete and Plakias is no exception. Sometimes the drains can whiff a bit but you just move on! There are not many things specifically for children to do but highly recommend a visit.Guest review byKayUnited Kingdom - 8.0

The main beach isn't that great but just a few kilometres away at Ammoudia there are three great sandy beaches. There are plenty of good eateries in Plakias, all with great views of the sea, and a few bars. Prices are just right for this area. The scenery around Plakias is breathtaking, even though you can walk from one end of the town to the other on a fabulous level walkway. If you are in a wheelchair like me it is just perfect.Guest review byBridge

From all the hotels we passed Kymani definitely looks the most beautiful/luxurious in Plakias! Everything is brand new & the interior design is amazing. There is a big parking in front of the hotel which is a plus ànd you have everything within walking distance: supermarkets, restaurants, beach… Another plus for us was that the hotel is so small. For this price, we never got something this nice. The house is perfectly clean and the garden is so nice. The walking distance are very good for persons who like to stay a bit outside (max. 10 minutes walk to the main beach, but just 3 minutes to the nearest beach and a very nice restaurant). The pool is nice like on the pictures, but not very deep, so it s more for relaxing than swimming, but the sea is really wonderful at Plakias and the surrounding beaches. If you have breakfast you have to go to the hotel, about 10 minutes to walk or you go by car, if you don t want to walk. Breakfast was really tasty. It is possible to visit around, either with a rented car or with the support of an organized group. There are lots of restaurants with fantastic quality food. The porches are close between rooms but the design of the space keeps the privacy. Same goes for the pool area. Very close to the beach, just note you’d be further from plakias center and most of the taverns (if you have a car or don’t mind a good walk, that’s a non issue).
