Different place, different experience. Not every place is a big smoke. One need to have an open mind. Waikabubak is for ( for us ) relaxing and enjoying nature. Love the mountains and forests all the way. And The Beautiful Ocean.I love not having TV for 4 days. I just watch the superb waves from our villas verandah at ThreeQueen Villas.

Waikabubak as a town is a non-descript typical provincial Indo town, with little accommodation and only one decent restaurant (great prices, great local food, cold Bintangs at D'SUmba Ate Waikabubak). There are few homestays and poor hotels. There are a couple of interesting Art Shops selling genuine antiques and local artifacts. There is one tourist shop selling local ikats mainly but at vastly inflated prices. The good things are all the traditional villages usually perched on local hilltops, including the touristy Prai Ijing (most of the houses now replaced by traditional LOOKING concrete rumah adats, only 1 year ago most were wooden structures) and then some great real untouristy places (e.g. prairame, kampung tarung). Also good access to waterfalls Lapopu and Matayangu. I wouldnt stay here for the town intself (in fact I would avoid it for that reason), but it is a great jumping off point for nearby attractions.

Go to Kampung Tarung, best ancestral village experience in Indonesia. Way WAY better than Rattenggaro! Authentic, free, no one is pushy about the stuff they sell, and you feel welcomed. Biggest highlight of Waikabubak!
