Important Port of Saintly Significance
The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

The location of the hotel was close to the highway for daily trips to other areas. It is a little isolated with not much to do around and a drive to Bari is challenging with the traffic. Parking is available underground for a daily fee. Buffet breakfast was quite good with a variety. Supplies for the room was limited and we therefore had to ask for items that were missing. Bari was our home-base, we could have spent more time exploring but our main aim was to use it as a comfortable base to start and end our day tripping. The old part of town was lovely and the people were very friendly. As a base it is wonderful, pretty much 60-75 minutes from everywhere we wanted to go! We visited Matera, Alberobello, Osuni and Martina Franca from Bari. The Basilica Pontificia San Nicola was very different and absolutely beautiful.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

We have used Bari as a starting and jumping off city to the rest of Puglia. When we are there we wonder why we don't stay longer! The Old City has retained a neighborhood feel that some others have lost. Still children playing in the streets, laundry on lines, the old Nonna gathering to talk about the old men, the old men gathering to talk about whatever old men talk about! Was a surprise and delight.
Was a surprise and delight. We arrived and took a stroll to the pier which was nearby to find locals selling their catch of the day. There was a shop at the end of the pier that sold cheap and tasty food. We purchased a snack and a beer for 2.40euro! The promenade gave us somewhere to walk every night with a cool breeze - it reminded us of the French Riviera. We swam at the nearest beach along the promenade which was so lovely. There were lockers to store your bags. The old town was close and was a delight to visit. The only down side we always found was locating toilets in Bari.
