A Bastion of Old World Charm
The arrival point of low-cost airlines and cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.
One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its pavement cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The next door Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.
Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by funicular railway.
A funicular also descends to the modern town – Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, and opposite is the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC play in a stadium to the north-east, while south-west is the train station from where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.

The Citta Alta (the historic part) is lovely to wander around and take in the architecture; and visit a church or two, and a museum or gallery. There are spectacular views from the Venetian Ramparts (Venice held the city at one point), not least full-moon-rise. And there are two funicular rides to take. But it can get packed in summer; on my first visit, I was "lucky" in that stories about Covid 19 had just begun to circulate and the place was almost empty. Nobody knew what to do in those days; one football league shut down, the other carried on. The cathedral had closed its doors, except for access to the Capella San Rocco (St Roche had healed plague victims many centuries before). Bergamo was Europe's tragic epicentre. It’s a beautiful small town with the old city at the top of a steep hill. It’s easily accessible by bus or the funicular. Walking round the old city is delightful and round each corner there are fascinating old buildings and churches. It’s a five star place to visit. I was totally impressed by the city.

The old city is really nice and it is walkable. The view from up there is incredible. There is plenty of paid parking available and there are a lot of signs. Be careful not to enter the non driving zone. My favorite place was the Basilica di San Alessandro, we went there the day prior to the San Alessandro's celebration and they were singing. The old town of Bergamo is fascinating and well worth a visit. We spent one whole day slowly walking around the old Venetian city walls - with stops at cafes along the way. The appartement and its interior design was one of the most beautiful and stylish places we have stayed at in Italy sofar. Everything was very cozy, comfortable and we had everything we needed. Citta Alta is reachable within 20 mins walking passing beautiful greenary and parks. The communication with Alessandro and Corrado was super easy and friendly and they even helped us arranging a taxi for a very early return flight in the morning. Thanks again for a wonderful time!! The property is reminiscent of pensions we stayed in in Italy many years ago. It is on the first floor of an old building and has the charm and character of a bygone era but has been renovated throughout.
