FAQs about hotels in Bergamo

A Bastion of Old World Charm

The arrival point of low-cost airlines with cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.

One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its sidewalk cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The nextdoor Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.

Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by a cable car.

A cable car also descends to the modern town, Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, across from the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC plays in a stadium to the northeast, while southwest is the train station where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.

Booking.com has several Bergamo hotels near the airport and the neighboring Orio Center shopping complex.

Bergamo is the perfect jewel of a City if you consider ( as I do) Italy as a wonderful box of treasure. Not too big, not to small. It's smart and elegant, but fun too. Don't bother with Milan, too busy, too dusty. Come to see Bergamo, the Upper Town and the 'Modern' (1700's) lower town will keep you enthralled. Great shopping, super food, it's sure to please. My friends at the Bergamo Tourist Office in the high city will be delighted to help you. As for accommodation....check the area carefully before parting with your money! Booking.Com isn't always fair!!!! Look at private listings online, or even ask! But there are plenty of good places and honest people. I think the centre of town is the best place to stay otherwise you are going to be jumping on and off buses. Anyway it's a wonderful place and I'm not saying that because it's my home town!

This property is in Bergamo Alta, which is the old medieval walled town. The new town is large and modern with all the shops you would expect in a thriving town close to Milan. Bergamo Alta is tiny with a maze of narrow cobbled streets. A leisurely ten-minute stroll takes you from one side to the other. A car would probably be pointless as there is almost no parking and many streets are too narrow with access restrictions. There is a selection of shops mainly catering for more discerning tourists and some excellent restaurants. The town square has been transformed into a green oasis with hundreds of plants and grasses growing in containers. The planting scheme shows imagination and an obvious knowledge of some rarer plants. Have seen a lot worse at Chelsea Flower Show.

The Citta Alta (the historic part) is lovely to wander...

The Citta Alta (the historic part) is lovely to wander around and take in the architecture; and visit a church or two, and a museum or gallery. There are spectacular views from the Venetian Ramparts (Venice held the city at one point), not least full-moon-rise. And there are two funicular rides to take. But it can get packed in summer; on my first visit, I was "lucky" in that stories about Covid 19 had just begun to circulate and the place was almost empty. Nobody knew what to do in those days; one football league shut down, the other carried on. The cathedral had closed its doors, except for access to the Capella San Rocco (St Roche had healed plague victims many centuries before). Bergamo was Europe's tragic epicentre. It's an irony that in the nearby town of Clusone you can view a mediaeval mural of the Danse Macabre.

It’s a beautiful small town with the old city at the top of a steep hill. It’s easily accessible by bus or the funicular. Walking round the old city is delightful and round each corner there are fascinating old buildings and churches. It’s a five star place to visit. Charming and interesting.

I was totally impressed by the city. I have not researched the city before going and simply by walking on the streets was positevly surprised by the cozy vibes, nice terraces and bars. It had a good mix of historical sites and more at leisure activities.

Hotel is modern, spacious and with amazing views, very clean and everything was high standard. It was only 10 minutes from the airport by taxi and close to the tram, which is 2 stops away from train station. Breakfast was very nice as well and all the staff in hotel was very friendly and welcoming! We stayed in Italy for 5 days and 2nights we spent in this hotel. Would definitely stay here again.

Our Hotel in Bergamo was perfectly located to visit Citta Alta and to stroll around the center of Citta Bassa. The room was clean and comfortable, staff friendly and well english-speaking and the breakfast buffet was large and good. As we only stayed 2 nights we didn't get to explore more services - but it is for sure our place of choice when we return again.

The hotel us very well located in the heart of bergamo. It is a few minutes away from Citta Alta and walking distance from the train station. The hotel is very charming, clean and the breakfast, served by the gentilissima Marisa, was very good. The hotel staff was very helpful at all times. We will definitely be back.
