A Bastion of Old World Charm
The arrival point of low-cost airlines and cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.
One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its pavement cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The next door Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.
Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by funicular railway.
A funicular also descends to the modern town – Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, and opposite is the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC play in a stadium to the north-east, while south-west is the train station from where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.

Città Alta (Upper Town) – the historic old town, situated on a hill, surrounded by the perfectly preserved, over 6 km long Venetian Walls (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Città Bassa (Lower Town). The city is beautiful, it has a lot to offer tourists, the people are cultured, there is a lot to offer, the architecture is at an enviable level, the upper town is simply beautiful and definitely worth seeing. The coffee is good of course, the food is too, the streets are clean and tidy, the parks are beautiful and tidy. I visited Bergamo in autumn, the colors are beautiful, but I am sure that the city is beautiful in other months too. Bergamo is a beautiful city! Very easy to navigate and the locals were very friendly. I would highly recommend a visit, and I will definitely be returning 😊 Citta Alta is a beautiful place to visit and having eaten at Antica Trattoria La Colombina, I can also highly recommend this place! Collecting us from Bergamo Airport for a small fee. And also met us after we checked out as my other half left his passport in the room, she drove to train station to drop it to us. The property is beautiful and very comfortable. In a great location only 20minute walk to train station, which we used to visit Lake Como, Verona and Milan. Check-in was made very fast and easy via communication in WhatsApp. There was water and coffee capsules (the coffee was good!) in our room waiting for us. Everything was clean. Maria helped us whenever we needed, very lovely! Also, a nice breakfast place was in a few minutes walk, also the bus station. It was easy to reach when coming from Bergamo airport.
