Capital of the Italian Tyrol

Bolzano is one of those cases that are difficult to describe without risking undermining its beauty and complexity. A witness of the conflicts and renaissance of Europe, this Italian city is the capital of the German speaking province of South Tyrol. Located in the Adige River Valley, it is surrounded by hills crowned by castles, and framed by the Dolomites Alps.

After reaching the local railway station, follow the Bahnhofsallee or Viale della Stazione and you’ll reach Walther Square, where the beautiful Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady is located. The shops along the arcaded street of Via dei Portici will lead you towards the market, located in Goethe Strasse. The display of colourful vegetables and flowers encompasses the beautiful buildings, while some of the best luxury hotels in Bolzano are located nearby.

    The city is incredibly charming, with a vibe that feels much more Austrian than Italian. It’s also surrounded by plenty of beautiful hikes (which I wish I’d had time to do!). I only stayed for two days, and while one day is enough to see the city itself, the real highlight is exploring the trails and nature nearby. The food is distinctly Austrian, hearty and delicious, and the bakeries are absolutely fantastic.

    Felt like Austria in Italy.

    Felt like Austria in Italy. Wonderful, relatively easy hike along the Freud Promenade (after a wonderfully long cable car ride with panoramic Alpine views) to a village where he got married and summered frequently. The Great Dolomites road was stunning. Otis the Copper Age mummy was well displayed quite interesting.

    Bolzano the town itself is really beautiful, many nice shops. The restaurants on offer were also very good and easy to get around. We went up to Ober Bolzano with the big cable car ride, it was amazing the views of the Dolomites unbeatable. What an amazing experience and the people of Bolzano are extremely welcoming and friendly, the service excellent

    Bolzano is gorgeous, and lots of different things to do. I wouldn’t spend more than 4 days in it. Renting a car would help to see the region and reach more places. We had a medical emergency and found the pharmacies easy to rich and very polite people. In general liked the people in Bolzano , polite and helpful. Only thing I did not like is how confusing and regimented was to dispose of garbage. Getting around is very easy by public transportation.

    We didn’t know much about Bolzano before arriving and were really impressed. The centre is easy to walk around and beautiful with historic buildings any mountains in the background. Pizza and ice cream a definate hit! The archeology museum was excellent - not to be missed and never forgotten! We also loved going up in the cable car - absolutely stunning. We only had about 3 hours up the top and could definitely spent longer walking and exploring.

    Bolzano was truly beautiful.

    Bolzano was truly beautiful. Alpine, idylilc, pastoral -- I felt like I was in a storybook! It's hard to imagine that places like this exist in this world, however, Bolzano is very real. Quiet, peaceful, lovely and refined. A throwback to a kinder, gentler world. I walked through the park near the river and it was truly relaxing. I shopped on Via Di Porticci which has high end shops. I also went on the Ritten Cable Car and the little train at the top of the mountain. It was delightful. This is a great place to relax and enjoy life.

    Room and appliances needs renovation. E.g. hair dyier is like 10 -20 years old and looks ugly, air cond did not work properly, but luckily could cool down the room to the acceptable temp. Bad is comfortable. Breakfast - it could have more options, but existing ones were good. It was important for us to have a pool and it was there. Overall I am ok with hotel, however, should I come again to Bolzano, I'd check for another option.

    Room was very well conditioned, with practically new furniture and facilities. The air conditioner in the room worked flawlessly in the summer heat of Bolzano. Bathroom was well equipped and was always clean. Although parking was not free, it was quite well priced and was located at a private underground car park (around 5 minute walk from hotel).

    The hotel is in the centre of Bolzano, perfect for restaurants, bars and shops. Excellent parking. Listening to the church bells every morning was amazing, although could be a bit early for some 5am start. Great breakfast
