Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of Mount Etna, Catania is the island’s second largest city. This charming destination features unique Sicilian Baroque architecture, large squares, avenues and a very important port.
On the northern side of the Cathedral Square, the historical Palazzo degli Elefanti houses the Town Hall of Catania. Facing the Ionian Sea, this beautiful seaside place is one the hottest Italian cities during the summer. Mount Etna is an active volcano and a nice place for skiing in winter or a trip to the solidified rivers of lava during the rest of the year.

Loved everything about Catania, very beautiful part of Sicily, would 100% recommend, visiting mount etna is a must. It’s breathtaking. Maravigghia gelato is amazing, mm! The old town of Catania is interesting and there are significant buildings to visit. The meat and fish markets are well worth a visit. High quality shops for everything you want in the newer parts of the city. Public transport is both reliable and cheap. As are the taxis. A lovely city in the shadow of Mount Etna. Lots of sights to see. The airport is fairly close to the city. There is a metro in the city although it only has one line and 12 stops at present but it is being expanded. Some very good museums. I can recommend two very close together. Catania is a working place.
Catania is a working place. No nonsense, not too charming, but active, where people work and earn money. The buildings, streets and the overall atmosphere have a grey/black appearance (downpour from Etna), adding to the 'welcome, but we have better things to do' feel. Not overly populated with tourists (plus!!) and good food in abundance (plus!!). We stayed for five nights in September in a beautiful apartment in the historic centre of the city. There are lots of interesting places to visit such as the Cathedral, the fish market which is a sight to behold,(wear old shoes) and lots of little side streets leading to piazzas and hidden delights. There are so many churches with bell towers to climb up we lost track of which was which. The port is very large and quite industrial, not so much a touristy harbour for strolling around. The city centre is pedestrian prioritised, traffic can enter but must give way to people. Catania is a charming city, full of beautiful buildings and quiet little piazzas.
