It's close to Merano (which is much better known and visited), and also fairly touristy, but with the businesses aimed more at cultured tourists rather than mass tourism (not sure if there were any chain hotels there), interested in arts and finer dining. We were staying in Bolzano and going to a concert in nearby Lana (one of many for the season) that finished too late to catch the train back - so we stayed at Hilpold. It was a great decision.
