Matara is not to be missed. The history is fascinating and dates back to centuries BC. If you enjoy challenging hiking, that's available too! Matera is incredible and a highlight of our trip to Southern Italy. We spent 2 nights there which was the right amount of time to fully explore the Sassi and the caves in the valley. There are lots of beautiful restaurants and sights to see. I highly recommend staying somewhere in the Sassi - you will not forget it! Matera is very hilly with lots of stairs and cobblestones so we stored our suitcases in a luggage facility near our carpark and just took an overnight bag for our 2 night stay.Guest review byKasNew Zealand - 10.0

The Sassi is a must experience in your lifetime place!
The Sassi is a must experience in your lifetime place! A TukTuk tour is best if you have mobility issues as did a family member. The local wines and cuisine Materana are delicious and Restaurante Stano is a very good choice for an elegant evening out. Get up early and walk around the circumference of the Sassi before everyone else gets there, it’s magical. A very interesting place with lots to see.
