The Cheaper Way to See Venice

Located just across the lagoon from the Venetian islands, Mestre is the mainland part of Venice and offers cheaper accommodation, with easy transport links to the historic centre. However, the city has more than just cheap hotels going for it.

Host to several festivals throughout the year, huge Parco San Giuliano offers fantastic views across the lagoon towards the Campanile and dome of St Mark’s Cathedral. Also worth a wander round is Forte Marghera, a former Austrian fortress on an island in the middle of star-shaped canals. One canal continues into the centre of the city and is lined with restaurants and bars.

Pavement cafes can also be found in Piazza Ferretto, a triangular square with a 12th-century clock tower at one end and the Teatro Toniolo at the other. This popular spot for a passegiata also has a modern fountain and several boutiques. Also good for shopping in Mestre is the Le Barche centre, a rather uninspiring building from the outside, but packed full of stores.

As for nightlife, Mestre has a number of clubs, including one at Tessera near to Venice Marco Polo Airport. Don’t fly out of there without having tried the little homemade cakes called ‘mignon’.

    It's a great location if you have a car. Staying on the T1 tram line was an easy and quick way of travelling into Venice with the service running frequently. Access to a local cafe, butcher and deli. Felt like we were part of the community.

    Generally people sleep in Mestre when they don't want to sleep in Venice Mestre is also more convenient when you have a car than Venice Now there is nothing much to do here and it's better if you avoid walking in the streets at night

    Mestre was a pleasant surprise at the end of our short tour...

    Mestre was a pleasant surprise at the end of our short tour of Italy. We spent 4 nights in Venice, 4 nights in Bologna, and 4 nights in Florence, and one last night in Mestre before flying out. The town had a working class charm that was refreshing. My only complaint would be that mosquitos were in our room. No sir. Not good.

    Mestre is a great place to stay and relax if you’re visiting Venice, instead of heading straight into the city. Grocery stores and other essential shops are close by, and the area has good connectivity to Venice with both buses and trams running regularly. There’s also a ticket center at the bus station where you can clarify any doubts and get the right ticket for your stay.

    The hotel was in the perfect location for my trip. Public transportation, including bus and tram services, was available within a short walking distance. The hotel itself was very clean and comfortable, and the staff were polite and helpful.

    A nice place to stay and close to Venice to see all we...

    A nice place to stay and close to Venice to see all we wanted to see. A little hard to find our Toniolo Rooms but part of that was our fault in reading map. No problem getting in as owner turned up when we did.

    The room was large, and there was a double bed. The room was clean. There was a possibility to leave the bag at the hotel before check-in time. The check-in was very fast. If you want to go to Venice, it takes you ~25 minutes (easy walking distance from the hotel to the train station of Mestre is 10-15 minutes + train to Venezia S.L. 10 minutes). But may be it is faster if you take a tram ftom the hotel to the station of Mestre.

    I had a great stay at MEININGER Venezia Mestre. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the room was clean and comfortable. The location is excellent—just a short walk to the train station, making it really easy and quick to get into Venice. Perfect for a convenient and affordable stay near the city. Highly recommended!

    Amazing hotel, staff were exceptional - assisted with directions to and around Venice, held our bags before and after check in and took them to the room. They also arranged for a taxi on departure. The room was fantastic, always clean and smelled amazing. Would absolutely stay here again if we returned to Venezia.

    The hotel is just excellent. Incredibly comfortable beds, big bathroom, complimentary drinks and biscuits, clean and spacious. It is right next to Mestre trains station which allows for very easy access to Venice and to all the other cities and regions in Italy.
