The Simplicity of the Emerald Coast
Olbia is all about the sea, and what a glorious turquoise sea it is. As the gateway to Sardinia’s stunning Emerald Coast, this down-to-earth town is often overlooked in favour of the more glamorous resorts. However, it does have attractions of its own.
The simple Basilica of San Simplicio dates to the 11th century and the Church of St Paul the Apostle is also medieval. The National Archaeology Museum houses Roman ships, as well as prehistoric artefacts from the surrounding area.
Sardinia has a wealth of prehistoric structures and one of these – the Tomba dei Giganti Su Monte‘e S’Abe – is near Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport and medieval Pedres Castle. Across the bay is Sa Testa Sacred Well, dating to at least 1200 BC.
Along the coast in Pittulongu are the real attractions – fantastic, unspoilt beaches from where you can see rocky Tavolara Island, a popular diving site. In summer, boats sail there from Isola Bianca Harbour, the arrival point of ferries from the Italian mainland. The harbour’s fishing boats are responsible for the fantastic mussels in Olbia’s seafood restaurants, some of which are amid bars and shops on Corso Umberto – the locals’ favourite passeggiata spot.

We did not spend time in the town. Instead we went to the beach and used local hiking trails. The area is still unspoiled and not over developed. I recommend using bug spray if out on extended walks on coastal trails.The archeological museum was closed for renovations. Olbia as an urban city has a wonderful centre.
Olbia as an urban city has a wonderful centre. The harbour and plaza areas are beautiful as are the two main churches. There is a great park with lots of play and sport facilities for all age groups. - across the road from the Martini hotel. There are also children's play areas situated along the harbour front There are numerous really good Italian and fish restaurants. There is a good selection of craft, souvenir and clothes shops to suit all budgets, We would have liked to have visited the museum but there were conservation conferences being held there the week we were visiting. We visited the small harbour front market and the larger Saturday market. During our week-long stay we spent one day at Mamas beach and took bus trips to a few of the small villages nearby, but to fully appreciate the beauty of Sardinia I would recommend hiring a car.Guest review byTetley18United Kingdom - 10.0

Its a great place to stay to discover the area (east side of the island), its right in the middle to visit La Magdalena and Oroseo Gulf. There is plenty of restaurants and things to do/visit. The beaches around the city were great as well (pitulongu, port istana). Olbia is a great spot when you plan to explore the northern or eastern part of the coast. It is a nice city with lots of cafes, restaurants. A car is a must, so you can travel freely without limits. Staying in Olbia without a car would be rather tricky and get you bored quickly. As a HQ for your travels is perfect. We took a train here from the South to explore North...
We took a train here from the South to explore North Sardegna and flew home out of Olbia. We didn't spend a lot of time in Olbia proper but we did see much of the surrounding area. This north island is absolutely gorgeous! If you have a car you can do many day trips from here. We rented a zodiac boat to explore La Maddalena, if your up for it this was a great alternative to taking the ferry across. The beaches around here can't be beat. We are adventure travelers and fell in love with this island. Hiking, biking, caving, snorkeling/diving, boating and Via Ferrata climbing- Sardegna has it all!Guest review byBillUnited States

There are also bus stops from which you can go to the beautiful beaches in Sardinia ,everything at your fingertips. The apartment was incredibly, clean, cozy, comfortable.
