The Simplicity of the Emerald Coast

Olbia is all about the sea, and what a glorious turquoise sea it is. As the gateway to Sardinia’s stunning Emerald Coast, this down-to-earth town is often overlooked in favour of the more glamorous resorts. However, it does have attractions of its own.

The simple Basilica of San Simplicio dates to the 11th century and the Church of St Paul the Apostle is also medieval. The National Archaeology Museum houses Roman ships, as well as prehistoric artefacts from the surrounding area.

Sardinia has a wealth of prehistoric structures and one of these – the Tomba dei Giganti Su Monte‘e S’Abe – is near Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport and medieval Pedres Castle. Across the bay is Sa Testa Sacred Well, dating to at least 1200 BC.

Along the coast in Pittulongu are the real attractions – fantastic, unspoilt beaches from where you can see rocky Tavolara Island, a popular diving site. In summer, boats sail there from Isola Bianca Harbour, the arrival point of ferries from the Italian mainland. The harbour’s fishing boats are responsible for the fantastic mussels in Olbia’s seafood restaurants, some of which are amid bars and shops on Corso Umberto – the locals’ favourite passeggiata spot.

    Its a great place to stay to discover the area (east side of the island), its right in the middle to visit La Magdalena and Oroseo Gulf. There is plenty of restaurants and things to do/visit. The beaches around the city were great as well (pitulongu, port istana). There are not a lot of parking places around so you might need to drive for a while and "fight" for a spot.

    Olbia is a great spot when you plan to explore the northern or eastern part of the coast. It is a nice city with lots of cafes, restaurants. A car is a must, so you can travel freely without limits. Staying in Olbia without a car would be rather tricky and get you bored quickly. As a HQ for your travels is perfect. Traffic for the tourists is tricky and you have to be extra careful.

    We took a train here from the South to explore North...

    We took a train here from the South to explore North Sardegna and flew home out of Olbia. We didn't spend a lot of time in Olbia proper but we did see much of the surrounding area. This north island is absolutely gorgeous! If you have a car you can do many day trips from here. We rented a zodiac boat to explore La Maddalena, if your up for it this was a great alternative to taking the ferry across. The beaches around here can't be beat. We are adventure travelers and fell in love with this island. Hiking, biking, caving, snorkeling/diving, boating and Via Ferrata climbing- Sardegna has it all!

    I Loved the city, especially at night when it came alive.

    I Loved the city, especially at night when it came alive. It makes a great city break, although you do have to get transport to the beaches. You can also stay on a beach resort and travel to the city. that's a personal choice. Would I go again, Yes I can't wait, maybe hire a car to tour more of the area.

    We recommend renting a car to be able to drive around the nearby towns of Costa Smeralda, and visit all the beautiful beaches in the area. It was absolutely beautiful and far exceeded out expectations!

    The feel of Aurora is unique. It is a beautiful and extensive family home that has been transformed into restful, quiet and very comfortable accommodation. Yet still Close to everything for day trips to all the amazing Sardinian beaches and Smaralda coast. Emanuela is the secret. We loved the warm welcome and genuine pride she takes in the home, and the wonderful dinner (optional) we enjoyed. The views over Olbia and coastline are stunning.

    A very comfortable hotel located within walking distance of the airport. Rooms are not large but comfortable and equipped with everything needed for a short stay. There is an excellent in house restaurant - Bacchus Restaurant which offers a good menu of Sardinian and Italian dishes and a good breakfast is available. There is ample parking available including secure underground parking if desired.

    The proximity of the hotel to the beach is just prefect! The personnel in hotel and at private beach is amazing. Breakfast is good and have a lot of variety. Sardinia is one of the beautiful places I have ever been and the sights from the beach are also magnificent.
