This is a beautiful place, quieter than other lakes we visited and the town is easily explored on foot or by boat. It has a beautiful piazza and many bars and restaurants - but also historic monuments - such as a hermitage and the twenty shrines to St Francis. The old town is lovely, and pedestrian.
The old town is lovely, and pedestrian. Lots of ice cream shops and restaurants. it wasn't too crowded (mid-July). There is a lovely lakeside path, especially on the north side of town. You can take a boat to the island which only takes 5 mins. Walking around the island takes around 20 mins (it's an interior path so you don't see the lake much while on the island), but the church is lovely. You can also walk up (quite steep) to the 'Sacro Monte' on the hill with its many frescoed chapels and churches dedicated to St Francis of Assisi. It is a quiet and historic town - visit to the island was worthwhile and there is a nice park with views to walk in above the town. It is a long, steep, walk from the railways station though! A lovely small town with narrow, cobbled streets. Easy access to boat trips across the lake. The Basilica on Isola San Giulio is outstanding and definitely worth a visit. A lovely town devoid of traffic with a varied range of bars and restaurants. Lovely walks around the town and lake, plus boat trips to other towns on the lake and the island. It does get busy at weekends with visitors. There is a big car park to leave your car, about 5 min walk to town square; payment is automated and simple. Beautiful setting and worth getting a lake view if possible. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Great breakfast on terrace with lovely views of the lake. Rooms are clean and spacious. There are lots of good restaurants in town which is only a ten minute stroll away. Also top class restaurant in hotel. Do take a boat to the little island in the lake and do the quiet pathway.
