This is a beautiful place, quieter than other lakes we visited and the town is easily explored on foot or by boat. It has a beautiful piazza and many bars and restaurants - but also historic monuments - such as a hermitage and the twenty shrines to St Francis. So quiet, so quaint. The Unesco site is very spiritual. Try to go early. This lake is so pretty and unspoiled. Stay in a hotel so you have the town for yourself at night. The old town is lovely, and pedestrian.
The old town is lovely, and pedestrian. Lots of ice cream shops and restaurants. it wasn't too crowded (mid-July). There is a lovely lakeside path, especially on the north side of town. You can take a boat to the island which only takes 5 mins. Walking around the island takes around 20 mins (it's an interior path so you don't see the lake much while on the island), but the church is lovely. You can also walk up (quite steep) to the 'Sacro Monte' on the hill with its many frescoed chapels and churches dedicated to St Francis of Assisi. Access to the town might not be easy if you have mobility problems as the car park is on the hill.Guest review byCarolynFrance - 10.0

It is a quiet and historic town - visit to the island was worthwhile and there is a nice park with views to walk in above the town. It is a long, steep, walk from the railways station though! A lovely small town with narrow, cobbled streets. Easy access to boat trips across the lake. The Basilica on Isola San Giulio is outstanding and definitely worth a visit. A lovely town devoid of traffic with a varied range of bars and restaurants. Lovely walks around the town and lake, plus boat trips to other towns on the lake and the island. It does get busy at weekends with visitors. There is a big car park to leave your car, about 5 min walk to town square; payment is automated and simple. The rooms were clean, comfy and playfully decorated in a modern fashion. The breakfast was very good and the location of the stay was optimal if you want to stay in the city center. The hotel is optimal located if you like to take a boatride on the lake, go the a good restaurant or bar or walk the pilgrim trail of holy Fransicus (which is recommended both for the nice views and for your karma ;-) ) . The apartment had everything needed for a comfortable stay. The service from Carolina and Veronica was beyond exceptional. They picked me up from the train station then the next day picked up my friend AND they took us back to the station on our leaving day. Instructions for apartment were clear and recommendations for food etc were there in abundance. Lovely stay in a lovely place.
