Regio Calabria is just beginning accommodating tourists. Just go with it and you will have a great time. Lots of history and lovely little villages/towns. trains are very reasonable and a great way to get around. When arriving at the airport at this time there is not a lot of onward travel information about getting to town or port but I'm sure that will soon occur. At the station they have a few people to help who speak English. The Bergamot museum is run by enthusiastic volunteers. The ferry over to Sicily is cheap and easy to visit. A very hip area with tons and tons of shopping. Most shops small but literally miles(plural) of them. Food choices abound Beaches clean and mature. A very clean bright city with a vibe. Temperature is very moderate but if no clouds it does get hot. Roads are very tight. Good police presence everywhere we went. Just there, not hassling folks. I love Reggio Calabria.
I love Reggio Calabria. It's beautiful and a walk through time. Visiting the Museum is a highlight especially to see I Bronzi di Ricace. The famous statues that were discovered in the ocean in the 1970's that are almost fully intact. There are also palaces to see as well. If you have time to take a day trip you can visit the ancient city of Gerace. You definitely need to have stamina to walk up the mountain. The locals there seem to live in an ancient time. Italy is never enough.
Italy is never enough. This was our first time in this region, and we certainly will come back. A fantastic Museo Archeologico is absolutely a must. I suppose in the summer it must be beautiful. Reggio Calabria is a great place to stay. Good bars, restaurants, shops and amenities. Superb views across the Strait of Messina to Sicily from beachside bars. It’s also a great base. We travelled to Tropea by train and Messina in Sicily by ferry - both great day trips - and transport is cheap compared to the UK. Prices in bars and restaurants in Calabria were good.
