The public transportation system could be improved.

The public transportation system could be improved. There are no signs to say where to go. The station Information Office provided incorrect directions and most of the time was closed. The metro platform was changed 2 minutes before departure to the opposite side of the station (8 platforms across). We had to run through the underground corridors to make it. No clear signage to follow. It was a miracle that we could still catch the train. We visited the Gardens of Minerva. There is an elevator that goes up to the gardens level. It wasn't advertised. Although we were 3 steps from it at the bottom of the cliff, we did not see the elevator because it was in an enclosed gang. Therefore we followed a curvy road up the hill in 30 degrees heat and even on that road there were no signs to say where the gardens are. Only when we got in front of the gardens gates we knew we arrived. The few (4) restaurants we wanted to eat out at, advertised on the Internet they were open and when we walked there they were closed, a piece of paper in the window announced the staff was on vacation. The park located near the vila comunale di Salerno was very nice, the sea boardwalk was pleasant. The city could manage the garbage better.

The old town of Salerno is well worth exploring with cobbled streets and hidden passageways. Excellent food options. There’s a nice wide pedestrian promenade along the Marina to walk up to old town. The port has ferries to take trips to the Amalfi coast. We went to Amalfi and got the bus up to Ravello (on our host’s recommendation). Make sure you buy your bus ticket before catching the bus. Ravello is stunning - up high with views along the coast.

Lovely little town with very good restaurants. Everyone seems to be nice and friendly in this place. We were on foot and enjoyed walking everywhere. Easy to take the Ferry to go to discover Amalfi and Ravello. We felt safe everywhere and many people speak English. A perfect place to relax and take in the culture with little streets everywhere. One never knows where he is going to end up! On foot walking along the seashore is a real pleasure! Easy to get to Salerno from Rome by train.

Salerno was fairly good, unfortunately the accommodation we had booked through Booking.com really put a damper on the holiday overall. Would recommend the ferry to Amalfi for a good day out and would very much recommend the Ristorante Pinocchio, super place to eat. But, we won't be returning to Salerno!

Salerno is a bit off the beaten tourist track, which is a relief in these days of over-tourism. It has a working port which is off to the side of the small city, so does not intrude too much on the overall look and ambience of the place. We greatly enjoyed discovering Salerno. It is quite attractive with a promenade and narrow park winding along the sea, and a pier where you can catch a ferry to the main points of the Amalfi Coast such as Positano and Capri. The historic centre is atmospheric and interesting with a beautiful cathedral, and many cafes, restaurants and shops. The food is delicious and well-priced. It's a great point of entry to the Amalfi Coast; much closer than Naples and much less hectic. A wonderful discovery!

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Montestella Hotel in Salerno, and it was a truly enjoyable experience. The hotel's location was convenient, allowing easy access to both the city center and the beautiful Amalfi Coast. The staff was incredibly welcoming and helpful, always ready to provide assistance or recommendations.

The room is spacious, elegant and very clean and has a comfortable feel to it. Also the shower and bathroom are super generous and it's a feel-good-sensation overall. The location is rather quiet and central and it takes only 10 minutes to reach the main train station of Salerno.

I found it extremely nice to spend the night on a boat in the middle of the harbor. The waves lull you into the night and you have a wonderful view of Salerno. Of course, a boat is not a hotel - but it's much cooler if you like being on the water.
