San Gimignano, with the Italian sun glistening intently on its 14 remaining towers, cuts a dramatic figure from its position high on a Tuscan hill overlooking vineyards. The 12th-century Collegiate Church of San Gimignano is a worth a visit with its wonderful collection of frescoes, and it also includes the Religious Art Museum.

San Gimignano is a very vibrant town with lots of good eating places. You will queue for the good ice cream shops up in the square though. Be prepared for a long wait. Good that it's very pedestrianised but a bit slight hill at start may not be to everyone's capability. Good amount of different shops if you like that kind off thing. San Gimignano is a beautiful little place especially before 9am and after 6pm when the streets are quieter. Between these hours it does get very busy as it is a popular tourist stop off. It is full of history and very easy to walk around. There are many places to eat and drink and lots of "souvenir" shops where you can buy wine, cheese, olive oil paintings etc. It is nestled in the countryside, nice for a walk or drive. There are buses too to take you to surrounding places including the train station at Poggibonsi (about 15-20 mins) and Sienna (just over an hour). Spectacular location and view. The roof top terrace was quintessential Tuscany with its incredible view. Exceptionally roomy apt with separate mini-suites for 2 of the bedrooms, really exceptional. San Gimignano is a unique gem - a beautifully preserved piece of antiquity. Unfortunately, it is a bit overrun by tour groups during the day, but early morning and from late afternoon onward, it is truly wonderful. It's well worth a longer stay as there are interesting exhibits/museums, absolutely magnificent hikes in the breathtaking countryside, and easy day trips to places like Siena and Colle Val d'Elsa.Guest review byHopkins
