FAQs about hotels in Syracuse

The Very Best of Greece and Rome

A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.

Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.

The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.

The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.

Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

We stayed in Ortygia, the Old Town part of Syracuse, whcih was a very interesting place, with narrow streets and old buildings. The market was great. We also went to the medieval Jewish ritual baths, the only surviving one in Europe, because it was blocked up during the Spanish Inquisition and only rediscovered in the 1960s. The Archimedes and Da Vinci Museum was amazing - found out a lot more of their discoveries and inventions. And the Archaeological Park was wonderful - needed a couple of hours to go around. Have to catch a taxi to get there - best to go later in the day if it is a hot day.

A fascinating historical city with a great deal to see and learn, plus great food and a lively buzz in the evenings. The beaches are small and stony but great for swimming and we found the local people friendly and welcoming.

Syracuse is packed with ancient Greek history and mythology.

Syracuse is packed with ancient Greek history and mythology. The island of Ortygia needs a full day on its own. The Archaeology museum is excellent, informative (and not dumbed down like so many these days) and the Greek theatre in the archaeological park is magnificent. With a car you get to Noto which is a baroque jewel, or with a longer drive (2-3 hrs) you can reach the best Roman mosaics in the world at Piazza Armerina or the temples at Agrigento. By the way eating on Ortygia is a bit of a tourist experience: hard to avoid tiresome musicians who spoil your conversation for half an hour and then expect a tip.

The island and old town of Ortigia is brilliant, historic, charming and a must visit. Syracuse is built-up, industrialised, and busy so we stayed in Ortigia and only used Syracuse for the bus service to Noto. The one hour bus trip to Noto was an enjoyable change of scenery and a pleasant day trip.

With its archaeological park and other sites, Siracusa was a History teacher's paradise. There were also excellent swimming facilities, and the streets were full of character, with some fantastic and reasonably priced bistros. Most people we encountered were friendly and helpful. There was also a vibrancy in the arts, with The Puppet Theatre a must-see. However, the busy traffic was a menace, and one felt as though one was risking one's life crossing the road. The bus service was hopeless, with one bus circling us around the same bus stop three times! The air quality was poor, and this affected my Asthma.

    Ortiga was beautiful.

Ortiga was beautiful. Definately recommend a walking tour of the area. Loads of places to eat and/or have cocktails. We especially enjoyed Moon - a vegan restaurant. (And we are not vegan or vegetarian usually). Also take a guided tour of the Archaelogical Park to get the most from it. We had a car so had to pay 15 Euros a night to park outside Ortiga but parking was close by. 2 days is enough time to see. We used the 3rd day to drive to a canyon with natural pools and then visit a nearby sandy beach.

The room was good quality with fridge, coffee machine, balcony, clean and tidy. The Xenia was very well run, very close to everything bars , shops, restaurants. The breakfast in the morning was as good quality as any that we have had in any hotel in Italy or Sicily and was varied and always replenished. All the staff are very friendly and very professional and take pride in what they do. Would recommend this establishment.

The property exudes an amazing charm, meticulously maintained with period features, grand public spaces, and beautifully refurbished rooms. Lovely details such as piano music on the veranda, a nicely smelling lobby, and above all, the best working Wi-Fi among all hotels we have been to in Sicily!
