Lake Views from Every Angle
On a narrow peninsula protruding into Lake Garda, Sirmione is a wonderful town famed for its multi-turreted castle, Roman remains and hot springs.
The 13th-century lakeside castle makes quite an impressive sight as you cross its drawbridge to enter the old town beyond. From its walls there are lovely views across red-roofed buildings towards the trees hiding the ruins of a huge villa that belonged to 1st century BC Roman poet Catullus. Part of the complex included baths benefitting from the thermal waters, and the town still has a spa today on the opposite side of the promontory.
Nearby is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with its 15th-century frescoes, and the surrounding narrow, cobbled streets are home to stone buildings and several Sirmione hotels on Lake Garda. The majority of hotels are mid-range, but there are still a few 4 and 5-star hotels in Sirmione to choose from.
Booking.com also has lots of accommodation by the lake in the newer part of town, and its Lugana Vecchia area has a UNESCO World Heritage-listed prehistoric site.
To the west of Sirmione is the lakefront town of Desenzano del Garda, while to the east is Peschiera del Garda, close to the Gardaland and Canevaworld theme parks. The nearest airport is Verona Catullo Airport to the south-east.

Lovely little town.
Lovely little town. September was not a bad time but a bit warmer period could be better. I wish I had more days to spend there to visit the other locations with the ferry which was quite easy and very comfortable. Sirmione has also nice beaches, spa, which would be good to visit. What a treat to get to experience Sirmione!
What a treat to get to experience Sirmione! We learned quickly that the "tourists" arrive by ferry around 11am and leave around 5pm so it's best to have an agenda away from the hub bub of the town during those hours. It was also enjoyable to see how the town quieted down prior to and after departure of the ferries. We walked to Lido & Jamaica Beach and went to the Thermal Spa during our days. It is definitely worth to stay in the old town (the Grifo Parking service is essential). The old town itself is very charming and it is worthwhile to explore every corner and small street - there are all sorts of magical little experiences.
