The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza swathed in vibrant pink blossom, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in paradise. The stunning location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
However, it’s not its only glory. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the Greek Theatre is also a triumph. Its largely intact seating offers wonderful views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Spine-tingling summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars also offer live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, whose clock tower and church are overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the centre of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the south-west is the long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and north is the bay by Mazzaró.
As you would expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there is no shortage of Taormina accommodation on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, town centre apartments and luxury B&Bs.

Taormina is one of the most beautiful places we have stayed at. The town is clean, safe and historic. There are lots of bars, restaurants, shops and cafes. The beaches are small but lovely. The water is crystal clear at Isola Bella and we spent ages swimming in there. There is a walk up lots of steps to the church and then on to the castle which we really enjoyed. Views on route were stunning. We would also recommend visiting the amphitheatre and go early when it is quieter. The trip to Etna nord was well worth it but take a jumper as cold up there. The Godfather tour is also lovely even if you have never watched the film. The two villages you visit are very old and beautiful. The views again are incredible. We walked most of the time as we were close to the town. The walk down to the beach was lovely and only took 25 minutes. There's a sweet little cafe on route if you need a rest. Taormina was beautiful. Lots to see. Walking up and down Corsa Umberto was lovely with great restaurants and shops. Would highly recommend recommend a day trip to Savoca and Castelmola. It has beautiful surrounds but has way too many tourists and is over populated. It’s actually unpleasant with so many hoards pushing their way through the old town. The service provided by the staff across Taormina was very rude, full of attitude and arrogant. Taormina is an absolutely stunning place. There are many areas to explore , the buildings are beautiful almost like a movie set. It is clean and safe. There are many places to eat and drink off of the main street Corso Umberto that are less touristic and better value for money. Rosticceria Da Cristina for arancini.
