September was much too hot and humid for a visit. Not sure when is cooler, though! The key tourist sites are overrun now, so head for the “atypical” locations - there are so many temples you don’t have to see the usual ones. Nijo-Jo castle is a must, but go later in the day to avoid crowds. We explored quite a bit in Kyoto Gardens, Palaces, and Temples. We loved that there were so many places to find food and good food at that when we were visiting most of these places. Convenient, flexible and reasonably priced, Young children ought to see the temples, shrines, gardens and museums too. Don’t fall for the expensive tourist trap hotels and restaurants in central Kyoto - this place has it all and much more for a fraction of the price! The staff was very friendly (even if not all of them speak English very well, they did their best to meet your needs). Every evening the futons were made ready for us. First time for us sleeping in a Ryokan and we found it more comfortable than we thought! Overall, it was a very special experience.
