I went to Nagano to do historical research at three separate facilities about an hours drive from central Nagano City. -- My main objective was visiting the Underground Imperial Headquarters 松代大本営地下壕 (松代象山地下壕) at Matsushiro. The tunnel system is impressive, and the museum next to it adds a lot of background. -- I visited the Hijiri Aviation Museum 聖博物館 in Omi, which displays items and posters full of info about its past as a stop for those on the way to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, as well as having a few combat aircraft and a main gun from the Japanese Battleship Mutsu. In an out-of-the-way place. -- I also went to the Mugonkan 戦没画学生慰霊美術館 無言館 in Ueda City. A very somber place since it introduces Japanese artists (showing a couple of their paintings) who died during the war years. Also in a rather remote location. It's unfortunate that all three have signs and displays that are almost exclusively in Japanese. Non-Japanese speakers who are interested in World War II history and happen to be near Nagano may still get something out of a self-tour of the tunnel system in Matsushiro, which is interesting to see in person (and cool in summer). The Wikipedia entry for it seems accurate, much more than you can find on site in English. Be aware that cameras are allowed at Hijiri, but cannot be used in the Mugonkan and in the Matsushiro museum (the tunnels are okay). I don't recommend taking kids to any of these sites.

Absolutely loved Nagano, so friendly and clean and easy to get around. We lucked out and arrived when the the dance festival was on which was really fun. There are lovely restaurants, good shopping and it’s easy to get around. The old part of the town and the temple are beautiful. We took the bus to see the snow monkeys as well which was worth every penny, even though it was 30 degrees they were still in the onsen, it was magical!

So much shopping to do both local or duty free.

So much shopping to do both local or duty free. Many sights to see and explore and of course close to the ski fields. Be sure to explore outside of the Train/Bus complex for shopping to compare prices. The variety of foods both fresh or pre-packaged are mind boggling. Awesome sushi, sensational bakery products and outstanding wines. Amazing variety of restaurants and as always all the staff are extremely friendly. I left my mobile phone on the bus seat and their staff ran around the area until they found me to return it! So wonderful!

We were there for a couple days just before we go snowboarding at Hakuba. Although it's a main station, the city is quite quiet which if you have been to Tokyo, it's totally opposite. It's just not what you expected. But if you like nature this is one of go-to place. You need to explore outskirt of Nagano(for example Togakushi Shrine) but it would take a while to get there.

the location was the key attraction. the hotel is linked to Midori where food and transport is easily accessible. It was very important as it meant that my 80+ year old mother is able to walk to the train station warm as we were in Nagano during winter. Food at Midori was great as always, there are really nice eating places close by as well. Next is the ease of transportation - most of the buses are routed here, so getting around Nagano is very easy. The room is a really good size and everything was clean

The Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan was very traditional and a great experience of old Japanese ways. The owners were extremely hospitable and breakfast was outstanding. Traditional Japanese breakfast. It was within 100m of the Temple and 26 min walk to or from the station. Busses to the station are easily accessible (10mins down the hill)just outside the Temple grounds. A very unique experience for my son and I.

Very central location, literally a couple of minutes on foot from train station, buses to the main two attractions (Zenkoji and Togakushi) departing from a bus stop right next to the hotel. The hotel itself was modern and clean, rooms were comfortable, not very big but also not the smallest by Japanese hotels standards. Good breakfast.
