My party of 5 total stayed only one night when hiking the Magome to Nagiso section of the Nakasendo. Proximity to train station and Nakasendo trail was the original selling point, but we fell in love with the place as soon as our host toured us around. It feels like staying at an artsy bed and breakfast, except you provide the breakfast and you get the entire place to yourself. There's small, delightful touches of personality and hospitality every where you look. We did not want for anything. Our sweet host met us at the front door to enter data from our passports and then gave us a walk through of the building. Two toilets and two showers was perfect for a group of 5. Fridge and other kitchen appliances work great. We listened to the CD disc player on the wall while reading the books and it was a lovely experience.The futons were placed very thoughtfully according to our parties needs. In addition to the trail and train station, there's a grocery store, a historic bridge and a cafe all within a couple minutes walk. The patios were a great hang out spot and we saw monkeys near the river around 7am. Honestly, I wish we had stayed longer but our plans dictated we move on. Next time we will try to book a few more nights so we can explore the area more!

Staff were very helpful assisting us with our travel plans and the breakfast and dinner were amazing.

Honestly, everything was perfect. The staff, the room, the view, the lounge, the onsen, the shuttle, and even the small details like the complimentary Japanese delicacies in the room. This is probably the best place I've ever stayed in. It cost more than I usually pay as a solo traveler, but I decided to splurge since there were no other places in Tsumago available. It was worth every penny and I would go back in a heartbeat 💜

At Kashiwaya Inn you are staying in a historical building that feels like a traditional Japanese home. They have added modern appointments like two toilets and a shower room in the back. The kitchen has all the tools and set up. Your bed is a traditional futon in a classic Japanese styled room. A great experience. The manager, Yakun, super cool guy that is really helpful and ready to make you stay memorable.

We loved everything about our stay here. The design was a beautiful mix of modern and traditional. The bed and couch were comfortable, the hinoki tub was great. Lots of space and fun and thoughtful details. Enjoyed relaxing and listening to records with a cup of coffee and exploring the beautiful area. The hosts were very responsive and even helped us book a dinner in the area as we were there when almost everything was closed.
