The bed was very comfortable. The room was small, but very clean and well organized. The beautiful onsen was a great surprise. Breakfast was good too. The hotel is just a small walk from the train station

We stayed here during our trip to Magomejuku. The living room, stocked with plenty of board games, was a delightful bonus for our family. The bunk beds were a hit with my kids as well, though naturally, they weren’t as comfortable or spacious as those in a good hotel. Walking through the beautifully preserved old streets in the neighborhood was also a real joy.

The pictures do not do this place justice! The ryokan is perched high on a hill near Nakastugawa Station. Each of the beautiful, traditional, Japanese homes are very separated and private, set in a gorgeous garden of Japanese maple trees. There are only a few homes so the stay was very quiet and relaxing, we did not see the other guests at all. There are two bath houses. One has beautiful glass windows with views of the surrounding trees. You can book the bath house private use and have it all to yourself. There was only one other guest when we were there so it was very easy to get the bath house. It dinner exceeded all expectations! Come with an empty stomach. There were at least 8 courses, cooked with local, seasonal ingredients. Breakfast was just as delicious. You can tell it was made with care and love. They explained every dish to us. We appreciated that they were trying their best in English and we had no problems with communication. This was the perfect way to end our hike on the Nakesendo trail. They picked us up from the station and dropped us off. We would definitely come back recommend this ryokan to all our friends and family.

The 8km trail from Magome was great and there were buses going from the station to take you to the start of that short trail. On the return you could either walk to the train station a short walk from Tsumago or catch a bus back to Magome then another back to Nakatsugawa station. Lots of options and times. A beautiful and picturesque walk.

We arrived here after our first four nights in Tokyo and welcomed the peacefulness and pace of the town. We walked two legs of the Nakasendo Way using Nakatsugawa as our base: one leg walking from Nakatsugawa to Magome and the other bussing to Magome and walking to Tsumago from there and then returning to Nakatsugawa to our delightful guest house. Everyone we met here was helpful and kind. .

We planned to do the Nakasendo Trail.

We planned to do the Nakasendo Trail. We took a train to Nagiso and walked the 23kms back on the trail. Easy to follow trail and relatively quiet out of the main villages. Note! IC card doesn’t work. Buy a separate ticket for the trip. We found restaurants hard to find but up at the supermarket we used a great little place. Staff didn’t speak English but with a screen to order and Google translate, we had a great meal cooked to order.

The location is actually in Magome, a very small mountain town outside of Nakatsigawa. The views are incredible and the town is very nice.. small shops and old style buildings. And from there you can hike to Tsumago and beyond. Highly recommend

Definitely a step back in time to the Edo period trail system through the Kiso valley. A glimpse into village life in Japan. The builder and shops were so authentic and peaceful. The Nakasendo trail was blocks away to hike to Tsumago. Standing near the waterfalls where Myamato Musashi trained was a gift. An epic part of Japan.

Getting to our ryokan was a simple bus ride to the town from the train station. We were graciously greeted by the host of the ryokan. Delicious traditional dinner with many small dishes, all prepared with care. We started our hike early from Magome to Tsuamgo without many tourists which was a plus to take in the tranquility of the trail. The waterfalls along the way were impactful. Stopped for lunch in Tsumago and had cold soba with grilled fish, simple but delicious. If you decide to take the bus back to Magome in the late afternoon, be prepared to wait, there may be a line and the bus only runs every half hour, depending on the day.

Firstly, the small town Nakatsugawa is a great place to explore the Nakasendo Way, and the Ryokan O is perfectly situated near the rail and bus stations, and a large supermarket. That it is a ryokan gives it a very appropriate vibe for this historic region. The rooms are a good size and the mattresses comfortable. The share facilities were clean and well maintained, and we never had a problem with access. It was also a great place to swap stories and tips with other travellers in the generous dining / common room.

We loved staying at Onn Nakatsugawa. This is a great, modern hotel with a Japanese twist. You still feel like you are having a traditional experience. We stayed in the Loft room with our two teenage children and the room was perfect. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the hotel has a lovely small Onsen that we enjoyed too. Breaky is a great, Japanese style buffet, but there is something for everyone if you prefer cereals or pastries. We stayed here while enjoying the Nakasendoo area. Perfect!

The staff were super helpful, and went beyond their way to help me. I'm super appreciative about it. Also, location is accurate as what's shown in booking.com, apprx 10 mins walk from lower entrance from magome post town ( same place as where it meets nakasendo route. The bed is also so comfortable, and the whole school setting was really interesting to experience! Would totally recommend this place.
