Touristy, somewhat charmless town that is nevertheless worth it for the magnificent shrines (Shinto, and the resting places of the first and third shoguns) and temples (Buddhist) and the museum (splurge on the museum! Seriously). Nikko is definitely a tourist town. But a very different feel from Tokyo. Although the shrines/temples were inundated with fellow tourists, they were really quite amazing. We found the beds cozy and the hotel very clean. It is also really important to mention the kindness and the availability of the owner (and he speaks a very good English!).
