I truly enjoyed my stay at Curio: new and clean premises, comfy beds, lots of room amenities, not far from the terminal bus station, 2 supermarkets with walking distance, great view overlooking a kanda house(I stayed in room A103), caring hosts.

Cozy guesthouse with a kitchen (coffee and tea are free, snacks are also available), a big dinner table in the common area and nice, clean bed rooms. Also the host was friendly and offered some vouchers for the local museum

Clean and modern facility. Owner was clear and friendly. It is a Guest Inn, aka a Hostel, so expect accordingly. I feel it is a bit unfair that other reviews complain about gaps to a Hotel service, it is not a Hotel. Rooms are private but bathrooms and kitchen are shared. Showers were great and super clean. The kitchen area was well equipped and there were a few items for sale like instant noodles, chips and water. As it is not located in Shirakawa-go (where you go sightseeing as a tourist) the Inn offers a shuttle to Shirakawa-Go bus stop. This was really good! Without big luggage you could also walk there in 25 minutes.

The hosting family was very welcoming and really made us feel at home. They did everything they could to help us and accommodate all our needs, and their hospitality truly exceeded our expectations in so many ways! Our kids loved playing with their sweet daughters, and told us they wanted to stay there forever. We had a lovely time and would love to visit again one day.

    1 day experience is perfect.

1 day experience is perfect. The tourist site can be done in a few hours if your arrive before noon. Next is to enjoy a good hotel stay with onsen and their gourmet dinner onsite from late afternoon to night. Follow by breakfast and leave to next destination. There is a storage place next to the bus terminal if you have luggage to store for a few hours and check out tourist venue next to it before heading to the hotel. We chose to ship our large luggage from Tokyo to Kyoto via the Family Mart or Yamato shipping services from Tokyo.

It has beautiful views of the snow, river, mountains and of course the thatched roof houses. The air is fresh but it is difficult to find a restaurant because they close early. It is boring at night. It would be better if visitors just go to Shirakawa for a day trip and stay at Takayama.

Shirakawa-go is a beautifully preserved hidden gem, offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage. Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time, with its iconic gassho-zukuri farmhouses and serene atmosphere. No matter the season, the scenery is breathtaking—whether dusted in snow, surrounded by cherry blossoms, lush with greenery, or glowing with autumn colours. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in traditional Japan.

Beautiful landscape with gassho buildings that are UNESCO heritage. There are quite a few museums open for tourists to get a deeper understanding of inhabitants who lived in these buildings many years ago. Many Souvenir shops and eateries... But most close by 5pm or 6pm. Limited dinner choices at night.

Shirakawa is a really gorgeous, serene village that we absolutely loved visiting. It almost felt unreal. Even though most of the restaurants and cafes were closed when we went (due to the season), it was lovely to just walk around and enjoy the sights.

Was a very nice locations to visit. The feeling you have from just walking around is lovely. A short trip is more than enough to get enough enjoyment out of it. Two or three days is sublime if you get up early to beat the rush.
