Shiraoi is a tiny town between Tomakomai and Noboribetsu, I think most people come on a day trip to visit the Ainu museum, Upopoy and don't stay. The town is famous for wagyu beef and there are a few restaurants offering this. Close to the hostel is a restaurant that serves jingis khan, grilled lamb, a Hokkaido specialty. There are lots of little cafes, izakayas and even an amazing gelato shop in town. It's an interesting place to spend a night and just enough off the beaten tourist track to not be difficult to get to so it isn't overrun with visitors. It seems that other than Upopoy, there really aren't that many to see, so I can imagine travelers doing a day trip before returning to Sapporo or NIseko, but there are some really nice restaurants, cafes, and bars in town which I think is worth checking and exploring if you are staying overnight.Guest review bywannabreakfreeJapan
