Takayama is beautiful, geared towards local and foreign tourists. The only catch is that some places will only take catch so you need to keep that in mind. We found beautiful crafts close to the temple, we also visited the local morning markets and caught the bus to Shirakawa-Go which I cannot reccomend enough.Guest review byHelenaMalta - 10.0

Takayama is a jewell in the mountains. Small, walkable, ( around the city or in the mountains ), has great food, friendly people… There are plenty of day trips from Takayama. We could not go to the valley to try onsen ( heavy rains ) and went to the Green hotel instead - the onsen there was, surprisingly, beautiful and relaxing. The train journey from Takayama to Kyoto is spectacular ( sit on the left side ) - amazing views of the mountains and the river.Guest review byMariaSpain - 10.0
It’s a beautiful historic town.
It’s a beautiful historic town. The hotel is in a perfect location. The town was easy to get around , plenty of stores, and restaurants. I would recommend taking a taxi to the Hida Folk village. Make sure to get to the morning market. See if there are any festivals going on. Try a Hida burger near the treat station. Enjoy all that Takyama has to offer. Takayama is beautiful in summer, the scenery is amazing, the historic villages are pretty and well kept. There is a large variety of food options and great coffee shops. We wished we stayed longer! Plenty of day trip options by bus, we went to Shirakawago. Takayama was good but beware if you plan to do the Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road drive - the website said it was open, but when we arrived it was closed. Better to ring in advance to confirm. Takayama is a great contrast to big cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. You feel more relaxed because you can walk almost everywhere and the streets are far less crowded. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with tall, evergreen and bamboo forests and many rushing streams and even small waterfalls. I'm very glad I decided to wander off the beaten path to stop here because Takayama had a unique distinctive vibe that I loved.Guest review byKathleenUnited States

We really enjoyed our stay; the western style rooms were very comfortable, the Outside Onsen brilliant (you take a little cable car down to the river opposite the hotel) and all included in the price. However the restaurant was outstanding- beautifully presented Japanese food, we had ordered vegetarian ahead and it was really impressive. Sit in your private onsen and watch the trees in the evening eat the dinner at the hotel. It is a sumptuous six course Japanese meal. Between sashimi, great sushi and hida beef you won’t be disappointed. The price is well worth it! You can easily reach it by bus from takayama and it is a nice walk to the hirayu waterfall. The staff is extremely helpful and nice (even that they almost speak no English). The room was big and well equipped. The Onsen is very nice. Dinner was superb with all kind of Japanese plates.
