Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow...
Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow monkeys. The walk to the monkeys was very pleasant (but it is advisable to wear wellingtons as it is very mucky). The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous.
The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous. We went at opening time and stayed all day. The morning offered the best viewing as there were less visitors(Most day trippers from Tokyo arrive in the afternoon). It is still very popular throughout the day but there is much more chance of getting a preferred angle to photograph the monkeys in the morning. However opportunities arise throughout the day. We had the whole 2 week trip with good snow, yet my wife was more interested in seeing the snow monkeys! I agree that the monkeys were amazing, but if planning to go, get snow spikes for the walk up, as it is icey and slippery and these are essential. Good place to stay if you are looking to self-drive and scenery is great! Not too crowded with tourist(in my opinion), near to Nakano town where you want to some small groceries shopping there. I also LOVED my room. Everything needed was provided and well decorated. You even have a space with table and chairs in addition to low typical japanese style table and cushions, and a sink and fridge. There are two onsens in the basement and you get a kimono to spend your time. Staff is super friendly !
