For a tourist location, it was hard to find restaurants open, or willing to seat us (a party of five). But in general the food was good and the location was great for hot springs and access to the snow monkey park.

Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow monkeys. The walk to the monkeys was very pleasant (but it is advisable to wear wellingtons as it is very mucky). There are many small Ryokans in the town - sadly all of varying standards. Our recommended one was Tsuyuru Ryokan. Great little place run by the amazing Yoko.

The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous.

The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous. We went at opening time and stayed all day. The morning offered the best viewing as there were less visitors(Most day trippers from Tokyo arrive in the afternoon). It is still very popular throughout the day but there is much more chance of getting a preferred angle to photograph the monkeys in the morning. However opportunities arise throughout the day. Just a note - I am a professional photographer.

We had the whole 2 week trip with good snow, yet my wife was more interested in seeing the snow monkeys! I agree that the monkeys were amazing, but if planning to go, get snow spikes for the walk up, as it is icey and slippery and these are essential. We ate at a few restaurants and the Prince west hotel, and had no issues with any food consumed

The rooms were very spacious with a private toilet. The location was fantastic and the hotel provided local drop off and pick up in their van. It was so convenient. We were dropped off at the snow monkeys and it was close enough to walk back. We loved using the public onsen which were right outside the hotel door. We did find the town a little unfriendly with regards to finding a place for dinner but the man in the ramen shop across the road was lovely and we really enjoyed our meal there.,

Hotel Tsubakino is an absolutely beautiful place to stay if the Yudanaka/Yamanouchi area. The facilities are exceptional & the rooms are incredibly spacious compared to other places we stayed. The public onsen is a real highlight, the mountain views from both indoor and outdoor baths are truly special. My partner and I also booked the private onsen which was a lovely experience. The staff were attentive & we were very well looked after during our stay!

Everyone was really friendly. We enjoyed the nice atmosphere, the very nice dinner and breakfast and we could really at the hotel. The shuttle to pick us up at the railway station and bring us to the snow monkey park was really convenient. The hotel was among the best experiences at our trip.
