We actually stayed in Kabalana which is just 25 min walk or 5 min tuk tuk drive from Ahangama. It was the right decision as Ahangama was twice as busy and Kabalana beach was way better. Ahangama is great for surfing, restaurants and social life! There are some weekly parties in town and a lot of solo travellers which can be met on social hostels, all around the town and at the beach. Definitely a quieter side of Sri Lanka, though its picking up and the nice part is if you have transport you can go visit the other beaches which are all in the same line and about 20-30 minutes distance within each other. There's a lot to do in terms if shopping some knick knacks, enjoying the food and some drinks as well. Great place for expats working remotely, the city has a huge western influence with all the beach bars and shacks, it is not so much authentic, but if you want comfort it's a good place to start with. The rooms are large, stylish, and very comfortable, and the beach view is truly stunning. In the off-season, the beach feels almost private - I went for a run each morning and had it entirely to myself most morning. The sunbeds overlook the sea, and the setting is peaceful and serene. The host family is incredibly nice and helpful. They helped us get a scooter and treated us with coffee and sweets! Location is perfect, two minute ride to the beach and centrally located between Galle and Mirissa. The room is next to a school which you can hear in the morning. But with ear plugs it’s no bother. This café is lovely too and the chef makes the best kottu I've eating in Sri Lanka! You can eat with a view on the ocean. The beach in front of the house is beautiful and not very crowded.
