Nuwara Eliya’s weather is quite different from most of Sri Lanka due to its high elevation. Unlike the tropical heat in the lowlands, it has a cool, misty, and unpredictable climate. Temperatures can drop below 10°C at night, and rain showers are common even during sunny days. Before traveling, it’s best to: Check the weather forecast for rain, fog, or sudden temperature drops. Pack warm clothing, as evenings and mornings can be chilly. Carry an umbrella or light raincoat, since showers are frequent. Plan outdoor activities (like visiting tea estates, Horton Plains, or Gregory Lake) for clearer parts of the day. “We visited on rainy days, which made it impossible to see the main attractions, as most of the time it was foggy.”

If you want to experience the coldest weather in Sri Lanka,...

If you want to experience the coldest weather in Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya is the place to be. Often called “Little England” due to its colonial charm, this hill town offers beautiful scenery and plenty of attractions. Gregory Lake is a highlight, perfect for a relaxing walk or a boat ride. Having your own transport (ideally a 4x4) makes it easier to explore the surrounding hills and hidden routes. The town also has great spots to eat, drink, and enjoy warm hospitality. Don’t miss a visit to one of the colonial hotels that once hosted many famous figures, including Queen Elizabeth II in 1954. A must-visit destination in the heart of Sri Lanka’s hills!

Great place to cool down in the highlands.

Great place to cool down in the highlands. We actually use blankets, coats and hot showers in June, which was a very welcomed change to the scorching hot cultural triangle and beaches. The town is very close (5km) from one of the ends of the very underrated Pekoe Trail, a 300 km, 22 stages long distance hiking trail, that is very interesting to see not only the tea plantations but the life it rural communities. Also very interesting is to observe the many small, commercial vegetables gardens that are scattered all over town. The town is 1800 mts above the sea level, and in June, their monsoon season, was rainy. Everything was incredibly lush and green, and the temperature very pleasant.

In the town you can visit colonial buildings (including the post office), Victoria Garden, Lake Gregory (that is probably a tuk tuk ride). There are opportunities to shop for gems. We also visited a number of very picturesque waterfalls, again a short tuk tuk ride away. We enjoyed plenty of hiking options a short car ride away from Nuwara Eliya. One segment of the Pekoe Trail starts in the nearby village of Kandapolla and it is the place where to take pictures of Sri Lankan countryside. The Horton Plains are also a car ride away. Nuwara Eliya is probably the coldest town in Sri Lanka. Make sure you pack warm clothes!

Colonial style villa with a beautiful garden, very fitting to Nuwara Eliya. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, especially the bed. staff is very helpful and friendly. They prepared sandwiches for an early departure for a hike as well and helped with the transfer to our next destination. Close to the city center, Victoria Park and the famous Grand Hotel where we had High Tea. Breakfast was good too, especially the pancakes.

I am glad I chose this hotel in Nuwara Eliya. It is totally value for money and is easy to find. We had a 2-bedroom apartment with mini-kitchen, toilet & bath, a dining area and a living area. The hotel is near the road and is facing a tea plantation which is spectacular. The city center, lover's leap waterfalls, Gregory park and tea plantations are a short drive away. The staff were kind.

Incredibly clean, well taken care of. The bathroom was cleaned multiple times throughout the day and we got fresh towels on the second day. Staff is very friendly and accomodating to your needs, such as drying our clothes after the rain. The hotel/hostel is up a small hill but is such a nice and quiet stay between the tea plantations. Undiscovered gem in Nuwara Eliya, stay here!

The hotel has a nice ambiance and smells great. There was a christmas theme which was quite fun in the more cold climate and British architecture of Nuwara Eliyah. Our welcome (coffee with cake), the breakfast and dinner were all great. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They even made it possible for my boyfriend to watch football on the tv in our room. Would recommend!
