I have been to this town on several previous occasions, (I live in Myanmar, and have an educational charity and donate at the various orphanages). Due to the current 'situation' in Myanmar, there are very few foreign tourists in Nyaung Shwe, and many larger hotels, restaurants and shops that cater to foreign tourists are closed. However, the locality is very safe and the local people are very friendly and helpful. The internet is relatively stable, but take a torch with you because the electricity supply to the town is only available for a few hours each day. Larger hotels have generators, but smaller hotels do not!Guest review bySimonThailand

The room was huge and spacious and the bed comfortable. On my last day the lovely owner made me a hamburger before my flight back to Yangon. Breakfast was perfect and abundance and gets you through the whole day. Also it is near the jetties for the Inle lake starting point on the boats. Good shops around and restaurants. Markets close by. There are problems with electricity, like everywhere else, but the hotel has solar panels and a generator. Not very good wifi. The staff is wonderful - they organized boat and car excursions to Pindaya and helped us buy bus tickets to Bagan. Breakfast cooked and served by the owner is so great. It has Western breakfast to local food.
