Oudewater is a typical small Dutch town, where most people...
Oudewater is a typical small Dutch town, where most people seem to know each other. It has some good small shops, a town museum, plenty of places to eat and drink, canals (of course), medieval buildings, and more. It's main visitor attraction is an original medieval weighing office dating to the 1600's where people who were accused of being a witch could get themselves officially weighed on a board suspended by chains from the ceiling and obtain a certificate certifying that their weight makes it imposible for them to be a witch. Witches had to be below a certain weight to be able to fly. Some accused made the long journey, even from neighbouring Countries, to the Oudewater weighing office as there weren't many around. Here visitors get weighed one by one on the original weighing scale and receive their personalised official certificate in their chosen language to (hopefully) certify that they are too heavy to be a witch. Fun for kids and adults alike. Upstairs is a short video and small museum. Definitely recommend this.Guest review byJulesUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Oudewater is a delightful town and was a surprise to us.
Oudewater is a delightful town and was a surprise to us. It is full of interest and history especially for a small place. Of note are the Hakenwaag, where you can find out if you a a witch! the Rope museum is also worth visiting as you can learn about the historical source of wealth in the town. It has some splendid buildings in a compact area. The town has a good range of cafes and restaurants all seemingly popular. It also has a pleasant variety of shops.
