Spreading for hundreds of miles from the mouth of the Oslofjord, Oslo is the largest city by area in Europe and is liberally covered in pristine forests rising up into the outlying hills. South of the unassuming city hall lies a vibrant waterfront known as Aker Brygge, which in summer is full of bustling outdoor restaurants and bars.
For the prettiest buildings head to affluent inner-city suburbs of Frogner and Fagerborg, or admire the traditional Scandinavian wooden houses of Bygdøy and Holmenkollen. Monumental buildings include the Royal Palace which runs daily tours and the Akershus Festning, which is a medieval castle that also served as a military base and provides impressive views of the Oslofjord. Oslo City Hall, or rådhus, offers even more distinctive architecture and it is the location of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
Nature is never far away in Oslo which is ringed by an archipelago of islands which are extremely popular in summer. Hiking, kayaking and sailing are all easily achievable within the city limits. Just as popular are the many museums. The national Museum houses Edvard Munch’s famous painting The Scream and Viking Ship Museum containing long-lost relics from Norway’s Viking past.

Only a day and a half stay in Oslo and a longer stay would have been better as there is a lot to see. Easy to get around the city and plenty of excellent cafe's and restaurants. Oslo is full of wonderful historical building buildings like the Royal Palace, City Hall, the parliament buildings, as well as a great modern art museum. The architecture is exceptional. Wonderful city to visit for a long weekend. So many great attractions, parks and museums and the Oslofjord is wonderful. I'd recommend booking a 2 hours cruise through booking.com too, as it's easy and so relaxing. The city is so quiet as it's not full of traffic or pollution and the central area is very walkable, and the trams and busses are easy to use. Food is very expensive, but manageable if you choose carefully! Recommend visiting some of the museums in Bygdoy (especially Fram) and the Frogner Park. Welcome to the capital of the country, in which people make children with their first cousin. Having children is important, so if you are a foreign man - do help the desperate Norwegian women, they need you badly! The other activity that is very important is renovation - you would not be able to walk for 10 meters without encountering a hole, excavators, trucks, people in reflective clothing redirecting to walk elsewhere. You will hear lots of drilling and hammering, and blasting, as there are construction sites everywhere. It is quiet usually for 2 weeks in July.Guest review byRiyaBoNorway
