Beautiful city. Went to see the lights and did not disappoint, even with cloud cover all the days we went! We downloaded a few apps suggested by AI, and they were super helpful. We used the Svipper app to travel around town with the bus, and it worked wonders for us and our wallets! Lots of things to see and do during the day as well. The botanical gardens were beautiful and super well kept. Polaria was worth the money. Restaurants are a bit expensive but great dining! We came for the midnight marathon as the principal drive for our visit but had a couple of days before to look around. We should have done it the other way round as we could not enjoy the sight seeing as much because of fretting about the run. I think our favourite thing were the seals at Polaria though. The city is very walkable but the scooters are easy to pick up if you have had enough. Unfortunately the cable car up the mountain overlooking Tromso was under repair and I was looking forward to going up it. Bought a 24 hour bus pass.
Bought a 24 hour bus pass. Was really easy to navigate to cathedral, botanic gardens, tromso museum, airport. Central downtown is very easy to walk around, harbor is pleasant. We got a rental car to explore outside the city after that for 5 nights before flying on. Iconic arctic city. Good people. Feels a little like it's geared up for American cruise ships; the main street has 7-11s and the world's most northerly MacDonalds and several giant souvenir stores. And, boy, is it hard to get a reasonably priced vegetarian meal? Beds were so comfortable and the showers were hot with great pressure. Staff were super friendly and helpful and the breakfast was amazing, one of the best I’ve had at any hotel. Breakfast runs late too, to accommodate guests who have been out late seeking the northern lights. John and Martha were very friendly and helpful and I had arranged to use their shuttle service (extra add-on) to get picked up at Eidkjosen after taking the No 42 bus from Tromso city centre.
