Impressed with this hotel: our room, staff, breakfasts, evening meals, underground parking (at$15pn). Breakfasts consisted of a good continental spread plus an individually prepared hot meal. I can't remember if the latter was included or whether I had prepaid. It did mean the breakfast was hot and not a possible lukewarm meal from a bain-marie. The hotel was just a little way from "town" (but not very far) and there was a Pac'n Save supermarket just over the road for nibbles and drinks. This was my second visit to Napier mainly to look at art deco commercial buildings (with Hastings also a must & possibly even a better example). I doubt there will be a 3rd visit (only because of age) but the hotel is now part of a Group and I would certainly consider those other hotels if they fall within my travel plans. Also by joining the free membership you get a good discount from meals etc.

Well first off the absolute best thing is the location. It is literally on the waterfront across from the beach and walking distance from a bunch of shops and restaurants. The room was large for the price and had a whole sit down tub and not just a shower, which I think was the only one I seen during my whole 10 days. There's an indoor heated swimming pool that unfortunately I didn't have the time to try. There is a relatively cheap breakfast buffet (about $15 USD). Tons of on site parking that they didn't charge for and I didn't have to bother with putting something on my dash, which was great after days of hiking and my legs/ankles being beat. It was cold in NZ when I went but the temperature control in the room worked like a charm.

It has many Art Deco buildings which makes it an interesting city. The area around the sound shell is beautifully landscaped. There seems to be a good range of food outlets and I had one of the best pork crackling meals at The Marine Bistro that I have ever eaten.

There is plenty to do, we are active relaxers and had a wonderful time cycling and walking. The Gannet safari tour exceeded expectations. There are plenty of good restaurants and at least a couple of great ones, Mister D restaurant is our all-time favorite. The public pools and spa are a real asset to the community; definitely worth a visit. Napier has to be one of NZ's best-kept secrets.

We loved Napier!

We loved Napier! The safe and easy to ride bike tracks along the beach and the wineries made our stay - get an eBike! It was very easy to move around, and the city centre and the sculptures were beautiful. Great places to eat and drink, friendly people and the wineries were the cherry on top. It's just a shame that the beach is so pebbly and swimming isn't advised.

My husband was born there and we have visited before during Art Deco week . Didn’t stay at the masonic then but ate there . That was fabulous . Stayed this time at the masonic. Disappointed by the empty shops nearby . Prehaps like any coastal town , a bit disappointing in the winter. The art deco centre across the road had moved. Didn’t find that , had planned to buy souvenirs there but came away empty handed. Farmers market was disappointing .

This hotel has bags of character, it has so much going for it. It has a kind of fifties Art Deco feel which is very much in tune with Napier itself. The staff were great and there are some charming and thoughtful touches (like helping yourself to a glass of port from the library). I would definitely stay here again! It even has a lift.
