Do yourself a favour and stay for a few days at this wonderful place. There are so many walks, and lots of beautiful spots to explore. It would be a shame to limit yourself to the main street. The museum and the French Printery are certainly worth a visit, as is getting up to the top of Flagstaff Hill and having a coffee from the van on Long Beach. The 4 Square shop is well stocked and reasonably priced if you are self catering.Guest review byAAustralia - 10.0

I have been to Russell a couple of times before but only as day visits so to be honest Ive only stayed in the little township itself but loved that. This time I stayed a night to attend a function. The motel was the icing on the cake because where you stay can make or break a stay anywhere. The view of the harbour below with boats anchored..you couldn't beat. I want to come back..and my friend and I intend to. It's handiness was great. Great afternoon of shopping..something for everyone & delightful 'The Grazing table' cafe for home cooked sweets with delicious coffee. Would have liked to spend more time in the fabulous looking book store..great looking coffee table books on display but I ran out of time. There is something for everyone here. Russell town can easily be walked around in a short time without stopping..but who wants to do that. It's a lovely, interesting quaint place with a lovely harbour looking over to Paihia where you go to connect to main highway..eventually. A day passenger ferry runs regularly from Paihia & to. There are other areas to visit over the hill and the car ferry over from Opua is very quick and efficient. And least but not forgotten..the fantastic Duke of Marlborough hotel and accomodation with its elegance gracing the shoreline is a highlight. I had a lovely evening supportng the Recuse Helicopters fundraising event..it was spent under gorgeous chandelier lighting with all the simple but lovely table settings. Beachfront walk, Pompallier House, French cafe next to Pompallier House, Christ Church historic Anglican church, especially the 10:30am service, the Russell Museum with extensive collections exceptionally well-presented and amazing and only $10. Long Beach. Boat trip to Urupukapuka Island and Cape Brett and Hole in the Rock. A lot of things to do from, the tours, to just walk around town, close proximity, of ferry system. I would have liked to chose to stay longer, did not have enough time. Location was great too, easy walk to the centre of Russell for shops, cafes, restaurants, and the waterfront and beach (and quick drive to 2 other beaches) and the property was nice and quiet. Kitchenette very well setup with all the basics you need for cooking. Heated swimming pool gets a good amount of sun and has nice loungers to laze on. There is a huge sting ray living in the beach next to the flat. You might find it sleeping under the bathing Island. Bridget had put red light torches in the flat for her guess to find Kiwis. We tried- unfortunately not successful. Im sure the next visitors will have more luck. One more thing. Book the Tucker Thompson boot-tour, when staying in Russell.
