Turangi is a beautiful, scenic location and the people are very welcoming and friendly. We were impressed by the service and choices at the Hydro Cafe, the Flytackle shop and the NZ Post shop. We also enjoyed the Pihanga Gallery showcasing local art and crafts and a delicious Italian meal at Valentinos. We stayed here because it made for a convenient base of operations for our planned day hike of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Unfortunately, that fell through as our shuttle was canceled due to rain, which then exposed the fact that Turangi itself isn't a very interesting town. There aren't really any activities, the stores and restaurants opened late and closed early... or just weren't open to begin with! We drove twenty minutes to a restaurant for lunch only to discover Google Maps lied when it said it was open for lunch! If you aren't choosing it for its proximity to Tongariro National Park, I'd advise staying in Lake Taupo instead.Guest review byTravisUnited States - 8.0

The cedar hot tub was amazing after we did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, the best way to end a very long but beautiful hike. The room was very nice and clean and made us feel like home. We have been staying at the Lodge for nearly 40 yrs as it was our Timeshare and love Turangi and the area for it's proximity to the mountain for skiing and time out in Taupo.
