We enjoyed relaxing at the riverside - restaurants, cafes, attractions such as the Hunderwassen centre, the Clapham Clock Museum as well as people-watching in the sunshine overlooking the river and marina, as well as walks along the riverbank. A peaceful, relaxing environment. We enjoyed a couple of nice restaurants in Quality Street but then discovered the Grand Thai and Indian Restaurant at the old Grand Hotel - such a lovely couple - very welcoming and great food - we went back for more.

First impressions of Whangarei was it was a small town, the roads were a bit confusing to navigate, the first few people we came across in the town area were rough and quite rude. As we went around the basin area we met some lovely people on walks. We found a nice park and ate at a few places. There were plenty of options for people with food intolerances. Overall it was nice to spend a couple of days there, but I'm not sure if I'd want to spend any longer there.

Great art around town. Lovely cafes along the waterfront.

Great art around town. Lovely cafes along the waterfront. Very pretty. Local man set up his woodfired pizza along the quay and made the most amazing authentic Italian pizza. In the morning someone else was selling artisan fresh bread in the same place. Amazing

The city centre has very good bar, cafe, and restaurant options. The pedestrian mall provides great access and ambience. More dining options are close by at the town basin (riverfront), which also has a great pedestrian ambience, with walking paths and artwork. The Hundertwasser art centre provides a great visual backdrop and is worth a visit. There are very nice walks both up and down the river from the Basin, as well as short drives away. The Whangarei Heads and coastline provide a very nice scenic drive, as well as terrific beaches.
