The weather/climate was just perfect. We went in mid September but apparently it's like that all year round. We found the restaurant and shop staff very friendly and didn't mind that we were English and couldn't speak Portuguese. If you like quiet cities that have a ton of stuff to do...
If you like quiet cities that have a ton of stuff to do during the day but are quiet at night then Funchal has more than enough to offer. If you want to relax, take in some gardens, some tremendous views, a bit of beach time, eat and drink great food and wine then you'll love it. Our first visit to Madeira and our 10 night stay in Funchal was excellent. It exceeded our high expectations. The West and East full-day bus tours of the island were excellent, as was the 3 hour trip on the Santa Maria de Colombo, a replica Christopher Columbus sailing ship. The only one real "city" on Madeira, very lovely, green, excellent choice of places for breakfast and dinner. Prices are also better than everywhere on an island. The cable car and Monte park are exceptional. You would probably spend more time travelling around the island than in Funchal itself. The pool and spa are lovely, and you can visit the spa as many times as you want. The staff are welcoming. The food and drinks were great and on days we were tired we chose to stay and eat at the hotel rather than walk into Funchal centre. We hired a car and we were always able to park.
