We went on a full day tour of Faial with Andre at Visitfaial. This let us see all the sites. Faial is a beautiful island and I wish we had more time there. Horta is more of a town than a city, size wise. It has a big marina and this was buzzing with lots to look at including some big yachts. There are some busy bars and restaurants which are fun to visit although we preferred the quieter ones in Porto Pim Bay Area. Genuino has lots of memorabilia from the owner’s sailing adventures. The tuna steaks were massive. We had a table upstairs at window with lovely views across the bay. What I love about Horta is that you feel like you are...
What I love about Horta is that you feel like you are entering an entirely different culture and way of living. I do not like traveling to areas where I feel it is American culture in a foreign place. If I go again I would definitely make more of an effort in learning the language enough to carry on small conversations. Breakfast was a culture shock for me. I am used to protein shakes and toast in the morning. They do not eat breakfast that way. There was only one place that served omlettes or eggs but even there it was not close enough to an American breakfast. Lunch and dinner were fine. If you will be there for a week or more I highly suggest you go to the grocery store for breakfast items like milk, cereal, bread etc. The pastries at the various bakeries are to die for. Horta has a long history with the sea and sailing. Its a walking paradise with sandy beaches and many trails with great views of island and sea. This place will take you back in time, great food and friendly islanders. Its a place where time has stood still for some time, but with all the moderns necessities. We loved the island of Faial and the town of Horta.
We loved the island of Faial and the town of Horta. It was low season and the weather was cooler and unsettled but we managed some magical moments to do a walk or check out a view. Our intent was to do more hiking and the wind and rain prevented much of this from happening. The whale factory museum, the volcano museum and the Skrimshaw museum were all worthwhile visits and when the weather is windy or raining, we still managed to learn some interesting things. Renting a car certainly gives you the flexibility to change up your itinerary with the weather. Be sure to check out the hi-lighted restaurants in the guide books. We really enjoyed some local bars and restaurants. Peter Cafe Sport is a must. We loved a special night out at restaurant Atletico, great meat and local lobster. It is an island, therefore the weather is a bit unstable: it rains, drizzles, and the sun shines, all in the same day! The good thing about it is if it rains it's not for long. The temperature is mild 22 - 24 degrees Celsius in first half of July, and there's always a breeze which makes it very comfortable, but you'll need something warm for the evenings. It's very quiet, not a lot of ppl walking around, but there seemed to be a lot of cars going, more than ppl on the pavements. Eating and drinking: the majority of restaurants and bars seem to be quite upmarket and tourist tailored (with matching prices) and they're on the seafront, by the marina and basically in the town centre. But you can find more affordable places (where the food is actually more delicious and the portions bigger), you just have to look for them as they are situated away from the seafront, in the back streets. Porto Pim beach is great, you can walk there, it's not far from centre and water is calm and warm. Overall we enjoyed our stay, there are whale and dolphin watching trips and other activities, such as snorkelling and deep sea diving. The sea at the beach is very shallow and you can walk far out. The apartment we stayed in was on ground floor with one room right on the road but it was not noisy. The air conditioning was effective. The owners are very friendly and have made a real effort to make everything comfortable. We appreciated the little extra touches such as a bottle of wine, fruit and macarons on arrival. We were able to check in early too which was great. Horta was our favourite town in the Azores and we would have loved to stay longer.
