Lively Gateway to Western Algarve
The 2nd-largest city in the Portugal region of Algarve after Faro, Portimão is best known for its beach resorts, sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and ochre cliffs. It offers a variety of shopping malls, restaurants, discos and bars. Don’t miss the fresh grilled sardines, a typical local dish.

Portimao is a nice place to visit. We rented a car after 2 days in Faro and were planning to visit other places in the Algarve but ended up going only to Sagres for one day and spending the remaining 3 days in Portimao. It seems like a good place for longer stays in a nice climate. The more historic part of town near the bridge is worth visiting and the beaches are very wide and scenic. There is a good variety of restaurants. The hotel and restaurant prices were very reasonable and the places were not crowded. Mid may was a good time for our trip. Every day in this area was 22-23 degrees and sunny with cooler evenings. I would recommend it.Guest review byHelene - 10.0
I loved staying in Portimao.
I loved staying in Portimao. It offers the possibility (via water taxi, tickets available at front desk!) to visit Ferragudo. This small fisherman town is very beautiful and charming. Portimao has it all: beach, scenery, hiking, stores, restaurants, pasteleria, cafés and bars. People are kind, polite, and let you cross the streets everywhere. Try Faina restaurant (best cod cakes!) Typical Portugese fare: try Squash Restaurant. For something unique and very “beachy”, try NoSoloAgua. The Bao buns are heaven! Portimao feels safe for walking around. Nice clean city. And don’t forget to book a Discovers boat tour to the caves!!! Mind blowing!Guest review byNancyCanada

It has a tour train that goes round portimao to show you more of what it can offrr. It is a couple of minutes walk from the hotel. Lots of amazing restaurants on the door step such as the Adris and Murca (I think this was the name) as well as the Safari, all fab service and amazing food. The staff was nice and helpful, and the free breakfast included many options. The beach is very near to the hostel and you can walk/trek along the coast to some very beautiful places.
