The city is so clean, the amenities are fantastic, the people are very friendly and relaxed. Everything you need is there and it has great history and wonderful parks and gardens. A gem of a city. The location is perfect for trips to places like Douro Valley and Serra de Estrela. Also a good location for cyclists who can access purpose built cycle routes on old the old railway line. Eating out is very affordable. Pay the two euro fee to go up to the museum above the cathedral it is probably the best attraction for two euros we have ever visited and the views down onto the square are lovely. Viseu is a charming, walkable, old city with a good balance of old charm and modern amenities. The cathedral area, for example, is within walking distance of a shopping mall, which is near the bus station. It seemed like there was a good cultural buzz as well, with several musical and film events taking place in the park and around town, indoors and out. The Casa Conselheiro Alfonso de Melo museum, right in city center, showcases---for free entry-- the writer's good-sized personal collection of Portuguese Post-Impressionist paintings, furniture, ceramic dish sets, and various other home objects d'arte. From there, a 15-minute walk through the narrow, cobbled streets of Old Town brings you to the cathedral and Nacional Museum Grāo Vasco, the gift shop of which offers a huge book selection, some in English and other languages. Viseu, located in the heart of Portugal, is a beautiful city with very good restaurants and bars/pubs, wine is a must to experiment and taste. The hotel has both an outdoor pool and a heated indoor pool. For the indoor one you will have to book a slot, as the pool is rather small. Our kids loved it all the same. The spa has a great wet and dry sauna. Message costs approximately 50-40€ but we didn't have a chance to try it. Staff was super nice and helpful - made our stay! You can't beat the location - the central square is visible from your balcony. Everything is within walking distance, and supermarket is just down the road.
