A Capital City with a Small Town Charm

The charming Slovenian capital, Ljubljana is the only large city in the country. Dominated by the Castle Hill with Medieval Ljubljana Castle on top, the city is a picturesque Balkan mix of architectural styles, romantic bridges and scenic views.

Due to two major earthquakes in 1511 and 1895, which destroyed many buildings, the Old Town features a range of styles: from Roman period, through Medieval Baroque to Vienna Secession. This trend exists throughout the city with many Gothic-style buildings featuring elements from different periods added later on.

Strolling along the Ljubljanica River you will see the Triple Bridge, connecting two parts of the centre and beautifully lit in the evenings. Make a stop at the Prešelen Square, Ljubljana’s most popular meeting point with Franciscan Church of Annunciation and one of the main shopping streets, Čop Street.

With over 10,000 cultural events a year and still preserving the charm of a smaller town, Ljubljana is a city where one can truly relax: on a bench in the Tivoli Park, in one of the bars of the Town Square or on a funicular going to the top of the Castle Hill.

    Very good vegan options.

    Very good vegan options. Cheap but strong cocktails everywhere. Good for children, there were lots of festivals on. There's always something on for adults. The buses are cheap and regular. The city is so well maintained. No litter anywhere. The people are friendly, no one gives you the hard sell. You can hire scooters if you're in a rush. There's photo opportunities everywhere. The castle has so many beautiful things, the lift is quite cheap and you get to see a lot of the place without actually paying the castle entry. Lake bled is also very close and a must see. If you go ask the bus drivers and other people if that's definitely the bus. Because it can be confusing. But 4 euros single to the airport or bled is very reasonable. Sundays are a little bit funny. It's not as closed as many countries, but do stick up on Saturdays with drinks and such.

    Ljubljana's historic city center is very easy to get around...

    Ljubljana's historic city center is very easy to get around by foot and the historic center has a number of shops, restaurants, and even a city market. It is also easy to take a boat cruise on the Ljubljana river and see more sites. The castle is also within walking distance from the historic city center. One word of caution is about getting to Ljubljana from Vienna Airport, which can be cumbersome and time consuming. I took the train through OBB from Vienna Airport, which took nearly 8 hours as I had to make 3 transfers with one of them from train station to a bus station to a train station. The train was also very expensive (138 USD) to buy the ticket on the same day. When leaving Ljubljana to Vienna Airport, I was able to find online a shuttle van (Easy Drive) service from Ljubljana bus station to Vienna Airport, which I was able to book online several days in advance, and it was direct with no transfers, much quicker (4.5 hours), and cheaper (50 USD).

    Old Town very pretty and charming; interesting historical...

    Old Town very pretty and charming; interesting historical buildings to view and many lovely outdoor eateries/sidewalk cafes. My stay was short so I only took in the Old Town area and walked in the vicinity of the hotel; day trips to Lake Bled or surrounding area would enhance experience.

    I think 10 days to 2 weeks would be a good amount of time if you are planning to explore things outside of Ljubljana. There if you are just doing Ljubljana then 5 days is probable enough time. A lot of placed of interest are within a 2 hour radius so that makes it easy to adventure out. There are tons of organised tours, public transport options to see things. I would recommend renting a car if you want to do things in your own time. I think these are great activities to try: Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave (there are 9km apart from one another. You can do the cave under the castle but wear appropriate shoes). Walk around Lake Bled (approx 6km, paved pathway, mostly flat). Zipline Dolinka Bled (this does involve some walking and steep pathways). Summer tobogganing (we didn't get to do this but you can see the track from lake bled and it looks like so much fun). Locksmith Alley in Ljubljana if you keen for an interesting/weird sculptural installation. If you into street art, then Metelkova (500m from the main train station). We walked up to Ljubljana Castle, the route we took wasn't too labour intensive but it was effort! You can always take the funicular. There are some great activities in the complex and great views of the city. We also did a boat trip down the river, it was lovely. Very pretty!     The historic centre is beautiful and calm and it's easy to walk around. It's quite a tourist destination so there were many tourist bars and restaurants but we also found quieter local places for a beer. I'm slightly ashamed to admit that we went to an Irish pub on two days, mainly because the beer and wine were reasonable and it was a good spot to sit and watch the world go by. Going up to the castle perched above the centre is worthwhile (walk or take the funicular), especially for sunset. We also visited Tivoli Park, in the wider city centre, an expansive green space with a modern graphic arts museum. We walked there and back, and on the return stopped to visit the National Gallery which had many interesting works of art. We arrived by train from Italy and on exiting the station, the local area does have quite a lot of graffiti. This isn't common in the historic centre thankfully and we learnt later that the area has a reputation for this. Another place to visit is Lake Bled, a well-trodden tourist day trip. We took the local bus, 1 hour to get there, 1.5 hours on the return (depends if you get the stopping service or not), but easy to do and the bus service is fairly frequent although it does get busy and it was a bit of a bun-fight at Ljubljana (Us Brits are used to the etiquette of queueing which didn't apply here!). Bled and the lake are beautiful and there are many scenic walks which can be taken to enjoy the lake and its scenery. An easy day trip. Everywhere we went the locals were friendly and English was widely spoken.

    Spent 4 days here, which was probably too long as everything could be seen in 2 or 3 days. Must do the Postojna Caves tour from here, a magical experience. If combined with Predjama Castle, make sure you give yourself enough time to get there and see the castle (say 1.5 hours) before the trip to Postojna. Also Ljubljana Castle was very good. You can get around pretty easily on the local buses. That includes going to and from Bled, and the airport (both are about 30 minutes bus ride away). We discovered that travel further afield is also possible from the main bus/train station - with an option including going to Zagreb, which would make for an interesting extension either as a long day trip or overnight stay before returning to Ljubljana. Lots of restaurants to choose from in the city. Veganika was very good (vegan food).

    Great experience in One66 hotel - they gave us free room update, staff was very pleasant and room and hotel overall was very nice and clean. The location is not in city centre, but it has free parking across the street. They also have a great bicycle storage space. Breakfast was great and freshly prepared. The ambient is very nice and interesting, modern. Would definitely come back again. Thank you!

    I recommend the hotel, and I like the concept. When you are just passing by and staying a night. It is very convenient. 10 minutes walk from the bus stop and the city centre. Clean showers, toilets, and the capsule are big enough, cosy, and clean. For me, the temperature was okay, although I opened my capsule to have some fresh air in the middle of the night. Checking in is very easy.

    Nice, quiet and well running hotel right on the pedestrian zone in the city centre of Ljubljana. Really great breakfast. Perfect coffee spot with the best desserts downstairs.
