FAQs about hotels in Istanbul

The Best of Asia and Europe

The city of Istanbul offers a trip unlike any other, encompassing Asian and European cultures to create a heady mix of art, music and food. The amazing Old Town and the Sultanahmet are home to iconic Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. More history is hidden in the Topkapi Palace, where you can glimpse the splendour and opulence of Turkey’s Ottoman heritage.

Take a stroll through the historic centre or the bustling Taksim Square before watching the sun set behind countless mosques and minarets. Local fish markets and numerous restaurants lining the bridge to Galata offer the Golden Horn’s daily catch.

If you prefer the fine art of bargaining to fine art, lose yourself in the Grand Bazar and maybe you’ll emerge with a hookah, some Turkish coffee, or even a carpet. The Spice Bazar further immerses you in the sights, smells, and tastes of Turkish culture.

Getting to Istanbul is an easy trip from Ataturk International Airport or Sabiha Gokcen Airport. Whether you want a luxury hotel on the Asian side or a budget hostel in Taksim Square, Booking.com has over 1,000 great accommodations for your holiday in Istanbul.

We enjoyed visits to the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and Hagia Sofia. Try to plan ahead and obtain tickets in advance. Online booking for the Hagia Sofia is a package with the museum. If you want to choose one or the other, you will need to queue. There were plenty of places to eat offering a variety of Turkish (and other) choices at reasonable prices. Eating out doesn't cost a fortune. Try the Turkish breakfast options. It is very easy to get around Istanbul using the fine public transport system. As is regularly said, get an Istanbulkart, a credit card sized plastic card that can be topped up. There are trams, buses, ferries and the metro where the card can be used and topped up. Topping up is simple, but avoid using your native currency credit or debit card. Use a currency card where you can pay in Turkish Lire (TRY) or use Turkish bank notes. Most public transport journeys cost a flat rate 35 TRY at the time of writing. Enjoy the tourist sites, relax in a bar or cafe, wander the streets or linger by the water front. Istanbul has plenty to offer.

    As a history-buff, I've always loved Istanbul.

As a history-buff, I've always loved Istanbul. It's fascinating historic heritage and its sights and layout along the Bosphorus. This time (3rd visit) though, I was turned-off by the pricing of tickets to visit the main sights (Aya Sophia, Topkapi, cistern, etc). Each place is costing €25 - €50 per person, which is too much (much more than any other top museums of the world). It felt as though Türkiye sees tourists as walking ATMs to be fleeced from their cash. Visiting their top sights felt more like you were visiting an attraction rather than discovering their heritage and culture. There are now also long, inefficient double-queues (ticket and then entry) for everything, which wasn't the case before. This even extended to the airport, where Carluccio's (a mid-range restaurant chain in UK) wanted to charge €17 for a glass of pilsner, €30 for a salad and €32 for a pasta!. It seems as 90% of the airport is overpriced x2-x6 times for Louis Vuitton customers. I also found that the treatment of most involved in the tourist industry seemed much colder and transactional than before, a sort of deliberate indifference. Lastly, everybody seems to smoke everywhere, at every moment! In summary, while I think Istanbul is an amazing city, I found it to have become a rather unwelcoming, greedy city.

Istanbul is a large vibrant city but was shocked at the price of restaurant meals and entrance fees. Main attractions are definitely worth seeing but just wandering around the bazaars and streets (for free) is fun.

Istanbul is a huge city with layers upon layers of history.

Istanbul is a huge city with layers upon layers of history. There's something to experience for all tastes whether you're a lover of history, food or shopping. The city is very walkable and has a well-functioning public transport system. The taxis are also quite inexpensive. If you're coming for a short stay, it will make sense to get a hotel within walking distance of what you plan to see to not get locked in traffic jams.

Istanbul is a beautiful city with so much to see.

Istanbul is a beautiful city with so much to see. However, it has become very expensive to visit tourist sites and have meals out. I found things in Istanbul prices than in New Zealand. The tourist sites have tripled since my last trip so I didn’t go to those this time. Also beware of the the taxi drivers as we got scammed twice then stopped taking taxis. The metro is a good way to get around Istanbul. However, if you want to travel out of Istanbul it’s better to arrange private transport rather than taking a coach as they stop at lots of expensive shops and waste your time.

I always stay at the Marble Hotel in Istanbul, whether with family or as a solo traveler. This December, I had three different bookings as I traveled to Bursa and returned. I've stayed here almost 10 times over the past three years, spending a total of more than 30 days. The hotel staff are very friendly and supportive. Eren is an excellent leader. The breakfast was outstanding, and the location is unbeatable—right at the heart of Taksim Square and Istiklal Street. December in Istanbul was exceptional, with amazing weather.

We had the best experience staying at Marius Hotel Sirkeci in Istanbul. I would give more than 5 stars for the location of the hotel—tourist spots and tram stations are just a short walk away. Hats off to their hospitality! The staff is fluent in English, and room service is prompt. I would highly recommend this hotel without hesitation if you’re looking to explore Istanbul.
